Clear the Windows Update download cache, restart the PC, and then download Insider Preview build 28120.3272 again; error 0x80246019 is not listed as a known issue for this specific build.^1^
1. Clear the failed update download
Back up important personal files before troubleshooting Windows Update.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
services.msc, then select OK. - Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution - Delete the files and folders inside
SoftwareDistribution, but do not delete theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
Clearing this folder removes cached update files so Windows can download a fresh copy.^2^
2. Verify the Insider requirements
If the download still fails:
- Open Settings → System → Activation and confirm Windows is activated.
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Program:
- Confirm that an Insider channel is selected.
- Confirm that the expected Microsoft account is linked.
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Diagnostics & feedback and enable Send optional diagnostic data.
- Ensure the PC is connected to power and has a stable Internet connection.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB drives, docks, and other external devices.
- Check free space on drive C:. Windows Update requires available working space during download and installation.
Windows 11 must be licensed and activated, an Insider channel must be selected, and optional diagnostic data may be required to receive preview builds.^3^
3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Go to:
Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run
Apply any recommended repair, restart Windows, and check for updates again.^2^
If it still fails
Submit the error through Feedback Hub and include:
- Error
0x80246019 - Target build
28120.3272 - A screenshot
- Current build from Settings → System → About
- Insider channel from Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Program
Microsoft’s Insider guidance recommends checking for a newer build and submitting logs and screenshots through Feedback Hub. If updates remain blocked, the supported final options are an Insider ISO clean installation or Windows recovery; back up all files first because a clean installation removes apps and data.^4^
Do not install enablement packages intended for other releases such as 25H2 or 26H2; they do not match Insider Experimental build 28120.3272.
