A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Common causes are:
- The document is opening in Viewing mode instead of Editing.
- In Word, use the mode drop-down in the upper-right corner.
- Switch from Viewing or Reviewing to Editing.
- The file was set to Always Open Read-Only.
- Go to File > Info > Protect Document.
- If Always Open Read-Only is enabled, select it to clear it.
- The document has editing restrictions.
- Some restrictions are set by the document owner or organization and cannot be changed locally.
- If the file was shared from OneDrive or SharePoint, the available modes depend on the permissions granted.
- The file is still locked from a previous crash.
- Close Word.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the file again and check whether editing is restored.
- A practical workaround if the original file stays view-only:
- Open the document in OneDrive or SharePoint in a browser.
- Download it to the local drive.
- Open the downloaded copy in the desktop version of Word.
If the document was intentionally made read-only, Word can allow reading or copying but not modifying unless protection is removed or a new copy is saved.
