Download a marco file from a device

I am attempting to download a hand-arm vibration file from a Cirrus Vibration Meter. However despite permitting macros in excel, microsoft is still blocking the download. I can't even see the device in my file explorer when plugged in. The excel spreadsheet can clearly identify that the device is plugged in because it displays an error message;

Cannot run the macro "CV31A_Software_V3.1.xlsm!ImportData". The macro may not be available in this workbook or all macros may be disabled.

Now I know it is being blocked because of the microsoft warning message: Microsoft has blocked macros from running because the source of this file is untrusted.

I can't manually unblock it however because it is not yet a file on my PC, since I can't download it, and it is not being downloaded via a specific website, it is a device, unconnected to the internet, plugged into my laptop.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I can't finish my report until I have this data.

    Hello James Humphreys,

Thank you for explaining the issue. I understand that you need to retrieve data from your Cirrus vibration meter to complete your report, but Excel is blocking the ImportData macro even though you have already allowed macros.

Based on the error message, I recommend checking both the device connection and the security settings of the Excel workbook.

1.Check whether Windows detects the vibration meter

    • Connect the device to your laptop.
    • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    • Check under relevant categories, such as Ports (COM & LPT), Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Portable Devices, to see whether the device appears.
    • If you see a warning symbol, open the device properties and check its status. User's image

The device may not appear in File Explorer if it uses a specific driver or the manufacturer's software to transfer data.

2.Check whether Excel has blocked the workbook

If CV31A_Software_V3.1.xlsm is saved on your computer, close Excel and locate the file in File Explorer.

    • Right-click the workbook and select Properties.
    • Under the General tab, look for the security message indicating that the file came from another computer or an untrusted source.
    • If an Unblock option is available, and you have verified that the file comes from a trusted source, select it, click Apply, and then OK.
    • Reopen the workbook and try importing the data again.

If the workbook is not saved locally and is opened directly through the device or another application, this option may not be available. In that case, we need to establish how the Cirrus software launches the workbook before proceeding.

    3.Verify the Excel macro settings

In Excel, navigate to File then Options go to Trust Center  after that go to Trust Center Settings then Macro Settings.

Excel may block macros from untrusted sources even when general macro settings allow them. I recommend keeping the default security protections enabled rather than enabling all macros globally.

You can find Microsoft's guidance here: Macros are blocked because the source of this file is untrusted.

4.Confirm the Cirrus software and device details

If the issue persists, please confirm the exact vibration meter model, your Windows version, and your Excel version. It would also help to know whether the workbook was supplied with the device or downloaded separately.

I hope this helps you get back to retrieving your data and completing your report.
