If Windows 11 cannot find any linked device after the hardware change, the supported path is:
- Verify the license is linked to the Microsoft account:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- If it says Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, the account is already linked.
- If it only says Windows is activated with a digital license, sign in as an administrator and use Add an account to link the Microsoft account.
- Confirm the installed edition matches the license:
- On the same Activation page, check whether the device is running Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.
- Reactivation works only if the edition before and after the hardware change is the same.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
- Select I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with the same connected Microsoft account.
- From the device list, select This is the device I’m using right now, then select Activate.
- If the device does not appear in the list:
- Make sure the same Microsoft account is being used that was associated with the digital license.
- If the troubleshooter still cannot find the device, Microsoft Support is the next step.
- If a product key was originally used:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
- Enter the 25-character product key used previously on that device.
- If the hardware change included a motherboard replacement:
- Windows may no longer find a matching license for the device.
- If Windows came preinstalled on the device and the motherboard was replaced, a new license may be required.
- If needed, Start > Settings > System > Activation and select Go to Microsoft Store to purchase a new license.
- If the troubleshooter still ends with “contact support”:
- Use Microsoft customer support for activation help.
- The support contact entry point provided is: customer support.
