Hello - I have received an Excel error message and selected "repair now". Nothing happened. Any advice for me?

The 'Repair Now' button on that error popup dialog only performs a quick repair of the Office apps and that rarely resolves the problem with the Office apps, the best option is to perform a full online repair of your Office installation.

Before performing this process, please log into your Microsoft account on this link (https://account.microsoft.com/services/) and check to ensure your Office licence or Microsoft 365 subscription is listed correctly on your account.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps - Installed Apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

If that does not resolve the problem, completely uninstall Office, restart your PC, then download and reinstall Office from your account online (https://account.microsoft.com/services/).

If Repair Now from the Excel error dialog did nothing, the next step is to run an Office Online Repair from Windows settings. This is more thorough than the in-app repair prompt.

    1. Close all Office apps.
    2. Right-click Start.
    3. In Windows 11, select Installed apps. In Windows 10, select Apps and Features.
    4. Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 in the app list.
    5. Select it, then choose Modify. If needed, select the three dots first.
    6. Choose Online Repair > Repair.
      • Quick Repair is faster, but Online Repair is the option that makes sure everything gets fixed.
    7. Follow the on-screen steps, then restart the PC.
    8. Open Excel again and test it.

If Excel opens to a blank gray window with buttons grayed out, Microsoft specifically recommends Online Repair for that symptom as well.

If Excel still hangs, freezes, or will not start after the repair, the next supported troubleshooting step is a selective startup (clean boot) to check whether another background app or service is conflicting with Excel.
