As you have noticed, Repair Now does not necessarily work. On the contrary, we see many reports in Q&A that it doesn't work.

Do the following: Exit all Office apps. In Windows Settings, go to Installed Apps and locate your Microsoft suite (Office for a perpetual license or Microsoft 365 for a subscription) and start an Online Repair. For more, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application.

Before you begin, verify that you can access your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that your Office product is associated with it. That way, you know that you can reinstall Office, which is usually the final step of an Online Repair.

That error usually means the built-in Repair Now prompt is not enough. The supported next step is a full Online Repair of Office.

    1. Close Word and all Office apps.
    2. Right-click Start.
    3. Select Apps and Features on Windows 10, or Installed apps on Windows 11.
    4. Select the Microsoft 365 or Office product.
    5. Select Modify.
    6. In How would you like to repair your Office Programs, select Online Repair > Repair.
      • Online Repair is more thorough than Quick Repair and is intended to fix corrupted Office files.
    7. Follow the on-screen steps, then restart the computer if prompted.

If Word still fails after Online Repair, try starting Word in troubleshooting mode:

    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Type winword /a and press Enter.
      • This starts Word without add-ins and global templates.

If Word opens with winword /a, the problem is likely related to add-ins, templates, or Word settings.

If Word still does not open, a damaged Word registry setting may be involved.

Warning: Editing the registry incorrectly can cause serious problems. Export the key first so it can be restored.

To reset the Word Data key:

    1. Exit all Office programs.
    2. Type regedit in Windows Search and press Enter.
    3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Data.
    4. Right-click Data and select Export.
    5. Save the backup as Wddata.reg.
    6. Right-click Data again and select Delete.
    7. Confirm, close Registry Editor, and start Word.

If needed, Word can also recover some damaged documents:

    1. In Word, select File > Open > Browse.
    2. Select the document.
    3. Select the arrow next to Open.
    4. Select Open and Repair.
