Windows Hello fingerprint setup requires a working sign-in method such as a PIN. If the PIN is unavailable, restore PIN access first, then set up fingerprint.
- Try resetting the PIN from Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Select PIN (Windows Hello).
- Choose I forgot my PIN.
- Sign in with the account password and complete the reset.
- If PIN options are unavailable everywhere, check whether a work or school connection is blocking Windows Hello.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- If an organization account is listed, select it and Disconnect it.
- Restart the PC.
- Then return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and try setting up the PIN again.
- After the PIN works, set up fingerprint:
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
- Select Set up.
- When registering the finger, place it in the middle of the fingerprint reader with light pressure and slightly change finger position a few times so more of the finger is captured.
- If fingerprint still fails after PIN is fixed:
- Make sure the fingerprint reader is clean and dry.
- In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello), remove and set up the fingerprint again.
- Add another finger if needed.
- Check for device driver updates.
- If Windows Hello worked before and recently stopped after an app, driver, or update, a recent change may be the cause. In that case, use the Surface guidance to restore or reset the PC only as a last resort, because reset actions can remove apps or data depending on the option chosen.
