    1

Look at the function keys (F1 - F12) on your keyboard, if one of them has a camera icon, press that key or Fn + that key to unlock the webcam.

    2

If that was not the problem, look at the camera lens above your screen, is there a small privacy slider that needs to be opened to access the webcam?

    3

If the webcam is still not working:

    A

Right click your Start Button and open Device Manager.

    Expand the 'Cameras' section.

Please provide a screenshot of that full Device Manager window.

    B

Click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

A gray camera preview on a Dell XPS should first be checked for an active hardware privacy control, then for Windows camera access and the Dell model-specific camera driver.

    1. Check the XPS camera privacy controls

A gray screen or crossed-out camera commonly indicates that camera privacy mode is active.^1^

    1. Inspect the webcam above the display and fully open any physical privacy shutter.
    2. Check the top keyboard row for a key showing a camera with a slash.
    3. Press that key once; if it shares another function, press Fn + that key.
    4. Close and reopen the Windows Camera app.

    2. Verify all three Windows 11 permissions

Even if permissions were checked previously, verify these specific controls because desktop applications use a separate setting:

    1. Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
    2. Turn on:
      • Camera access
      • Let apps access your camera
      • Let desktop apps access your camera
    3. If Camera access is grayed out, sign in with an administrator account or have an administrator enable it.^2^

Then open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras:

    • If the integrated camera appears under Disabled cameras, select it and choose Enable.
    • If it appears under Connected cameras, open it and select Troubleshoot.
    • If it does not appear, continue with Device Manager. A missing camera here can indicate a missing driver, nonfunctional device, or a device disabled elsewhere.^3^

    3. Check whether Windows detects the hardware

    1. Right-click Start → Device Manager.
    2. Select View → Show hidden devices.
    3. Expand:
      • Cameras
      • Imaging devices
      • Sound, video and game controllers

    Follow the matching result:

    • Camera listed with a down-arrow: right-click it and select Enable device.
    • Camera listed with a warning symbol: open Properties and record the error under Device status.
    • Camera listed normally: open Properties → Driver. If the failure began after an update and Roll Back Driver is available, use it and restart.
    • Camera missing: select Action → Scan for hardware changes. If it remains absent, check the BIOS and Dell diagnostics next.
    • Camera present but still gray: uninstall it from Device Manager → Properties → Driver → Uninstall Device, select Attempt to remove the driver if offered, then use Action → Scan for hardware changes and restart.^2^

    4. Run Dell diagnostics and check BIOS

Run Dell SupportAssist’s camera hardware diagnostic. A reported camera hardware failure should be handled by Dell service rather than further Windows repair.^4^

If diagnostics do not detect the camera:

    1. Restart the laptop and press F2 when the Dell logo appears.
    2. Look under System Configuration or Miscellaneous Devices.
    3. Ensure the webcam/camera is enabled.
    4. Save changes and restart.^5^

    5. Install the exact Dell driver package

Use the Dell support page for the laptop’s exact Service Tag/model, then install available updates in this order:

    1. Chipset
    2. Camera or MIPI camera components
    3. BIOS/firmware
    4. Restart Windows

Dell documents missing or incorrect MIPI camera drivers as a cause when the camera fails in the Windows Camera app, Teams, and Zoom. Apply that branch only if the exact XPS model uses a MIPI camera.^6^

Avoid using a generic USB Video Device driver unless Device Manager identifies the webcam as a USB/UVC camera; it may not be appropriate for an XPS MIPI camera.

If Dell diagnostics pass but the camera remains absent from both BIOS/Device Manager and Windows camera settings after installing the model-specific packages, contact Dell with the exact XPS model, BIOS version, and diagnostic result. That combination points beyond an app-specific problem and requires model-level hardware or firmware investigation.
