Claim the bundled Office 2024 offer from a preinstalled desktop app such as Word—not from the Microsoft Store Library—and associate it with the Microsoft account you intend to keep using.
Claim and activate Office 2024
- Open Start, type Word, and launch the preinstalled Word app.
- If Word displays Office is included with this PC, select Activate Office, Claim, or the equivalent offer button—not Try Microsoft 365 or Buy.
- Sign in with your personal Outlook/Microsoft account.
- Complete the redemption prompts, accept the licence agreement, and then close and reopen Word.
- In Word, select File → Account. Under Product Information, confirm that it shows Microsoft Office Home 2024 or Microsoft Office Home and Business 2024, rather than an unlicensed Microsoft 365 trial.
Microsoft documents activation through the preinstalled Office app for PCs supplied with Office, while Try starts a Microsoft 365 trial and Buy opens a new purchase flow.^1^
Windows activation under your Outlook address does not itself complete the Office claim; Office must be associated with the account during its own redemption process.
Check whether the claim reached your account
Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page:
https://account.microsoft.com/services
Sign in with the same account used in Word, scroll to Products you’ve purchased, and look for Office 2024.
- Office 2024 is listed: the licence has been claimed. Install it using the Install button beside that product. After installation, open Word and sign in with the same account. Microsoft’s supported installation flow requires the account associated with that Office licence.^2^
- Office 2024 is not listed: the offer has not been attached to that account. Do not choose Continue for free; in a closely matching case, that option provided only free/mobile or web functionality rather than the licensed Windows desktop apps.^3^
If Office 2024 is listed but Word still requests Microsoft 365
Only in this situation, remove the preinstalled trial or conflicting Office installation and reinstall from the licence page:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall existing Microsoft 365, Office trial, and other Office installations.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Select Install beside Office 2024, run the installer, and sign in with the account holding the licence.
A matching Windows 11 case was resolved by removing the conflicting Microsoft 365 installation and reinstalling Office 2024 from Services & subscriptions.^4^ Uninstalling the applications does not remove locally saved Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents.
If no claim option or licence appears
Check the laptop invoice or HP product listing to confirm that it explicitly includes a perpetual Office Home 2024 licence, rather than only a Microsoft 365 trial. If the perpetual licence is confirmed but neither Word nor the account page offers it:
- Contact HP first with the laptop serial number and proof of purchase so it can verify that the Office entitlement was provisioned for that device.
- If HP confirms the entitlement, contact Microsoft activation support and provide the purchase evidence and screenshots of:
- Microsoft Store → Library → Included with device
- Word → File → Account
- The account’s Services & subscriptions page
Microsoft provides Office download, installation, activation, and account support through its consumer support channel.^5^
The special process that waits for a Microsoft 365 trial to expire before offering Office 2024 applies only to certain preinstalled PCs sold in Japan; do not follow that workflow unless your HP offer expressly matches those conditions.^6^
