Yes—while the original Azure Free Trial subscription is active, Azure Databricks Premium DBU usage and its Azure compute, storage, and networking charges are deducted from the remaining $200 Azure credit rather than charged separately, unless a charge is an excluded third-party Marketplace purchase.
Microsoft states that the first-30-day credit can be used on any Azure service except third-party Marketplace purchases. Non-free Azure resources used during that period consume the credit.^1^
What your Premium workspace will consume
Selecting Premium did not activate the separate Trial (Premium – 14-Days Free DBUs) offer. It created a normally billed Premium workspace.
When you run a cluster or other billable workload, costs can include:
- Premium-tier DBUs
- Virtual-machine compute
- Storage
- Networking
Azure Databricks bills DBUs according to the workload and tier, while the underlying VMs are also billed.^2^ These are separate cost components, but both are Azure usage against the same subscription credit. Creating the workspace alone is not the same as running compute; charges accrue when billable resources are provisioned or used.
Why the 14-day DBU trial failed
That result is expected: the Databricks 14-day trial explicitly requires an Azure subscription that isn't a Free Trial Subscription. Its documented prerequisites include changing the subscription to pay-as-you-go, removing the spending limit, and obtaining the required regional vCPU quota.^3^
Therefore, the two offers should not be confused:
- Azure Free Trial: $200 Azure credit for 30 days.
- Databricks trial tier: free Premium DBUs for 14 days, but unavailable on an Azure Free Trial subscription.
Protection against unexpected charges
Because you have not upgraded to pay-as-you-go or removed the spending limit, the default $200 spending limit remains in place. When usage exhausts that credit, Azure disables the deployed services for the rest of the billing period rather than continuing ordinary usage beyond the credit.^4^
The same applies when the credit expires after 30 days: the Free Trial subscription and services are disabled until you upgrade.^5^
To manage the trial safely:
- In the Azure portal, open Cost Management + Billing.
- Select the Free Trial subscription and open Cost analysis.
- Group costs by Service name or Resource to track Databricks, virtual machines, storage, and networking.
- Terminate Databricks clusters immediately after each exercise and configure cluster auto-termination.
- Delete the workspace and its resources when finished if they are no longer needed.
- Do not remove the spending limit or upgrade unless continued pay-as-you-go billing is acceptable.
If you upgrade before the 30-day period ends, the unused credit remains available only for the remainder of the original 30-day period; later usage is billed at pay-as-you-go rates.^6^
For learning without consuming the Azure credit, consider Databricks Free Edition. It is intended for students, hobbyists, and learning, remains free subject to daily usage limits, and provides limited serverless compute rather than classic compute.^7^
