Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Use this check order for a new Windows laptop that was advertised with Microsoft 365 benefits:
- Open a Microsoft 365 app such as Word.
- If a screen appears saying the device includes Office or Microsoft 365, sign in with the Microsoft account shown or the account intended for the benefit.
- On many new devices, the product key is digital and transmitted to the PC, so no printed key is provided.
- If the screen instead shows Letβs get started with options to try, buy, or activate, that usually means only a trial is currently installed.
- In that case, Microsoft 365 is not yet associated with the signed-in account.
- Available options are to activate a trial, buy Microsoft 365, add it to an existing subscription, or enter a product key card if one was included.
- Check whether the subscription is already attached to the correct account.
- For consumer Microsoft 365, go to Services & subscriptions on the Microsoft account dashboard and verify whether an active Microsoft 365 subscription appears.
- If it does not appear, the most common issue is signing in with a different Microsoft account than the one used during device setup or redemption.
- Check whether the laptop benefit is available through Microsoft Store.
- On eligible devices, open Microsoft Store > Library > Included with device and look for the Microsoft 365 1-year offer to claim.
- For the 100 GB storage benefit, verify what subscription was included.
- Microsoft 365 Basic includes 100 GB of cloud storage, but it does not include the full desktop Office apps for Windows or macOS.
- If the laptop was expected to include full desktop apps, the included offer may be different from Microsoft 365 Basic.
- If the 100 GB storage or Microsoft 365 subscription still does not appear after signing in with the correct account, use Microsoft support channels.
- For Microsoft 365 activation issues, guided support is available in the browser.
- If sign-in is the problem, use the Microsoft sign-in helper tool.
- If the entitlement still cannot be found, contact Microsoft Support.
- For the Xbox Game Pass offer on a new laptop:
- Make sure the same Microsoft account used when the laptop was first set up is signed in.
- Check Microsoft Store > Library > Included with device.
- If the offer still asks for payment or is missing, install pending Microsoft Store and Windows updates, restart, and check again.
- If it still does not appear, contact the laptop manufacturerβs support, because OEM promotional Game Pass offers are often tied to the device and the manufacturer may need to verify the entitlement.
If the device was advertised as including all three benefits and none can be claimed, the fastest path is:
- verify the correct Microsoft account,
- check Microsoft Store > Library > Included with device,
- open Word to trigger the built-in activation flow,
- then contact Microsoft Support and the laptop manufacturer with the invoice and screenshots.
