Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I am trying to add my own debit/credit card as the payment method for my Microsoft 365 Family subscription and replace the existing saved payment methods, which belong to other people.

Initially, when I entered my card details, the system proceeded to OTP verification. I entered the OTP successfully, but after verification, the process failed and I received a message asking me to choose another card or indicating that the process could not be completed.

Since then, I have tried again, but the system now displays an error stating that the card details are incorrect and does not proceed to OTP verification. I am experiencing this issue even though I am entering the card details carefully.

I request you to investigate why the payment method verification is failing, check whether there is any restriction or verification issue associated with my Microsoft account, and help me add my own card successfully.

Please also advise me on any steps required to replace the existing payment methods without encountering this error.

Thank you for your assistance.

Add and assign the new card from the Microsoft 365 Family subscription itself—Services & subscriptions → Manage → Change how you pay → Add a new way to pay—while signed in as the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options")

    Replace the payment method

    1. Open Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services.
    2. Sign in with the account that purchased Microsoft 365 Family. A family member cannot change billing for a subscription owned by someone else.
    3. Find Microsoft 365 Family, then select Manage.
    4. Select Change how you pay.
    5. Select Add a new way to pay, enter the new card, and complete the bank verification.
    6. Select the newly added card as the subscription’s payment method.
    7. After the subscription shows the new card, open https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments and remove payment methods you no longer want saved.

Do not remove the currently assigned method until the new card has been accepted and attached to the subscription.

    Resolve the card rejection

Because OTP verification already succeeded once but the authorization then failed, check these items before submitting the card again:

    • Country/region: At https://account.microsoft.com/profile, ensure the Microsoft account country/region matches the card’s issuing country and billing address. A region mismatch can cause an otherwise valid card to be rejected.^2^
    • Billing identity: Enter the cardholder name and billing address exactly as held by the bank, including city and postal code. Do not abbreviate the address unnecessarily.^3^
    • Browser session: Retry the subscription flow in an Edge or Chrome InPrivate/Incognito window. This avoids saved cookies or extensions interfering with the payment handoff.^4^
    • Bank authorization: Ask the card issuer whether it blocked the Microsoft transaction and whether the card permits online, international, and recurring subscription payments. Microsoft specifically recommends checking with the bank when adding a new payment method returns an error.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options")

    Important conditional cases

    • Subscription bought in another country/region: If this Microsoft 365 Family subscription was originally purchased in a different country or currency from the new card, changing the current profile may not be sufficient. Turn off recurring billing or cancel the existing subscription, allow it to expire, and then purchase a new subscription using the current country and billing information.^5^
    • Recurring billing is off: Change how you pay will not appear. The already-paid subscription remains active until expiry; update the payment information and purchase or renew when appropriate.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options")
    • Past-due balance: Select Pay now under the subscription before changing the regular payment method.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options")
    • Purchased through a retailer or another third party: Payment changes must be managed through that provider rather than Microsoft account billing.^6^

    If it still fails

Only Microsoft billing support can inspect account-specific restrictions or failed payment attempts; Microsoft Q&A cannot access billing records. Go to Microsoft Support, select Get Help, enter Microsoft 365 Family billing/payment method, and then choose Contact Support.^6^

    Provide:

    • The exact error message
    • The date, time, and time zone of the failed attempt
    • Whether OTP verification appeared
    • The card type and issuing country—only the type/country, not its number
    • The Microsoft account and subscription country/region

Never provide the full card number, CVV, or OTP in a forum post or support chat.

Hello! I can help clear up what is happening.

Microsoft's billing security system has temporarily blocked your card after the initial failure to prevent fraud, which is why it now rejects your details without sending an OTP.

To resolve this issue, please follow these short steps:

    • Wait 24–48 Hours: Stop trying to add the card immediately. Repeated attempts reset the security timer and keep the card blocked.

    • Call Your Bank: The initial OTP failure usually means your bank flagged the Microsoft charge as suspicious. Ask them to whitelist Microsoft billing.

    • Match Billing Details: When you try again, ensure the billing name and address entered on your Microsoft account exactly match your bank statement.

    • Switch the Card Safely: Once the block lifts, add the new card at microsoft.com. Then, go to your Services & subscriptions tab, change the payment method for the Family plan to your new card, and safely delete the old ones.
