Enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), run Startup Repair, and—if that does not restore boot—remove the latest quality update from WinRE; treat the charging problem separately because the timing alone does not establish that Windows Update caused it.
1. Stabilize power and restart once
- Disconnect docks, USB devices, external displays, and other accessories.
- Connect the charger and cable designed for this laptop directly to its charging port—not through a dock or hub. An underpowered or incompatible charger can cause slow charging or battery discharge while plugged in.^1^
- If an update-progress screen is visible and still changing, leave the laptop connected to power. Otherwise, if it is completely unresponsive, hold the power button until it shuts down, wait several seconds, and start it again.
- If it now reaches Windows, back up important files immediately. Use Restart, not another forced shutdown.
2. Enter Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows still hangs during startup:
- Turn on the laptop and wait for the Windows or manufacturer logo.
- Hold the power button until it turns off.
- Repeat this interruption once.
- Turn it on a third time. Windows should display Automatic Repair.
- Select Advanced options.^2^
Forced shutdown can interrupt disk activity, so use this sequence only because the computer is already unable to start.
If WinRE requests a BitLocker recovery key, obtain it through your organization’s approved process. Certain recovery tools cannot continue without it.^2^
3. Repair startup first
In WinRE, select:
Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair → Restart
Startup Repair checks common startup failures, including damaged system files, boot configuration, incompatible drivers, and registry errors.^3^
If Windows starts afterward, back up the device and record:
- Laptop manufacturer and exact model
- Windows version
- The latest update’s KB number from Settings → Windows Update → Update history
- Whether charging fails in Windows only or also while the laptop is powered off
4. If Startup Repair fails, remove the latest update
Because the failure began immediately after an update, use:
Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall Updates → Uninstall latest quality update
Restart and test. Windows officially supports uninstalling a recent update from WinRE when Windows cannot be accessed.^4^
Removing a security update temporarily removes its protections. If this restores the laptop, pause further deployment through your organization’s normal update-management process while IT checks the exact KB and device model.
If the quality update cannot be removed, return to Advanced options and try System Restore if a restore point exists. Avoid Reset this PC until important files are backed up; reset is a broader recovery action and may remove applications or data depending on the option selected.^2^
5. Diagnose charging separately
If the laptop does not charge correctly even while shut down:
- Try a known-good, manufacturer-approved charger of the required wattage.
- Connect it directly to the correct charging port.
- Inspect the port and cable for looseness or damage.
- If available, run the manufacturer’s preboot/UEFI battery and AC-adapter diagnostics.
Failure to charge while Windows is off points away from a normal Windows driver problem and requires the laptop manufacturer or hardware support team to check the charger, battery, charging port, or mainboard.
If the device boots and charges while off but not in Windows, update only the manufacturer-approved BIOS, firmware, chipset, and power-management drivers for the exact model. For a business-managed device, have IT perform this step rather than using generic driver-download sites.
Escalate when
Contact the device manufacturer or organizational IT if:
- The charging indicator remains off with a known-good approved charger.
- The laptop cannot enter WinRE.
- WinRE or recovery USB also freezes.
- The battery is swollen, unusually hot, leaking, or emitting an odor—disconnect power and stop using the laptop.
- BitLocker recovery information is unavailable.
- Multiple managed laptops developed the same issue after the same KB; provide the model, Windows version, KB number, and update time to the update-management team.
