Connect the PC to the internet, sign in with the Microsoft account previously used on this computer, and run Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot to recover its existing Windows 11 digital license.
Reactivate the existing license
- Open Start → Settings → System → Activation.
- Confirm the installed edition shown there is Windows 11 Home.
- Sign in to Windows using the same Microsoft account used before the reinstall.
- On the Activation page, select Troubleshoot.
- Apply the troubleshooter’s proposed fix, restart the PC, and return to Activation to check the status.
A previously activated digital license normally activates the same Windows edition on the same hardware without requiring the product key again. During a matching reinstall, Windows setup can be completed by selecting I don’t have a product key, after which activation occurs online ^1^.
If the troubleshooter reports a different edition
The edition installed now must match the original digital license or product key:
- Home license/key: Windows 11 Home must be installed.
- Pro license/key: Windows 11 Pro must be installed.
Errors such as 0xC004F210 or 0xC004F212 indicate that the installed edition may not match the license. If the troubleshooter finds a license for another edition, follow its instructions to install that edition ^2^.
Because Windows 11 Home is already installed, verify that the key is specifically for Home, not Pro, Enterprise, or another edition. If the computer originally had Pro, reinstalling Home will not use its Pro digital license.
If activation still fails
On Settings → System → Activation, note the complete error code and use the matching action:
-
0xC004C003: The key is considered invalid or may have been used on more devices than permitted. If purchased from a reseller, contact that reseller; if Windows came with the PC, contact its manufacturer. -
0x803F7001or0x800704CF: Windows cannot find a valid license. The product key may be in the purchase email, Windows packaging, or Certificate of Authenticity attached to the computer. -
0xC004FC03: Check the internet connection and whether a firewall is blocking activation. If necessary, search for and run SLUI 04 for phone activation. - Another error code: Use the Get Help app from the Activation page to contact Microsoft Support and provide that exact code ^2^.
If the motherboard was replaced, that is a separate hardware-change case: on the Activation troubleshooter, select the reactivation-after-hardware-change option and use the Microsoft account previously linked to the license. A preinstalled OEM license may require assistance from the PC manufacturer.
Do not post the 25-character product key publicly.
