My system won't allow me to access the phone link option. It keeps saying phone link needs an update but can't do it at this time. How do I fix this?

    Hi, @Marion Lenoir

Phone Link does need to be updated when Windows prompts you to update it.

To help narrow down why the update is failing:

    1. What happens when you try to update Phone Link? Do you see any specific error message or code?
    2. Does the same issue persist after restarting the PC and trying the update again?
    3. Are you able to open Microsoft Store and update other apps normally?

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

Update Phone Link through Microsoft Store instead of the update button that is currently failing, and also update Link to Windows on the phone if the message identifies the mobile app.

    1. Update the Windows app through Microsoft Store

    1. Close Phone Link.
    2. Open Start → Microsoft Store.
    3. Select Library → Get updates.
    4. Install updates for both Microsoft Store and Phone Link.
    5. Reopen Phone Link and check Settings → About → Updates.

Microsoft recommends using Library → Get updates when a Windows 11 Store app cannot update normally.^1^

    2. Update the phone-side app if requested

The “Update Required” message can refer to either Phone Link on the PC or Link to Windows on the phone.

    For Android:

    1. Open Link to Windows.
    2. Select Settings → Check for Updates.
    3. Install the update, then close and reopen the app.
    4. Keep the phone and PC connected to the same Wi-Fi network during this process.^2^

If Link to Windows came preinstalled on a Samsung phone:

    1. Open Galaxy Store.
    2. Search for Link to Windows.
    3. Select Update.
    4. Restart the phone, wait a few minutes, and then close and reopen Phone Link on the PC. Updates can take several minutes to be recognized.^3^
    1. Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
    2. Find Phone Link.
    3. Select the three-dot menu → Advanced options → Repair.
    4. Reopen Phone Link.

If Repair does not resolve it, return to the same page and select Reset, then restart the PC. Resetting clears the app’s local data, so Phone Link may require setup again.^4^

    4. If Microsoft Store itself cannot obtain updates

    1. Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
    2. Install all available Windows updates and restart.
    3. Return to Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.
    4. Try the Phone Link update again.

If Windows Update also fails, run the automated troubleshooter from the Get Help app; Microsoft identifies that as the first diagnostic for Windows 11 update failures.^5^
