I am trying to create a subscription for Microsoft Teams. It appears my email is associated with an admin account. I do not know what this is. It may be something I created in the past and cannot remember. My email is associated with both personal and work account. Can someone dive deeper into what is going on? Would like to clean this up.

    Hello @Dana Meyer ,

Good day! I hope you are doing well.

Microsoft accounts (personal accounts used for services such as Outlook.com, OneDrive Personal, Xbox, and Microsoft 365 Personal/Family) are separate from work or school accounts that are managed through an organization's Microsoft 365 tenant. It is possible for the same email address to appear in both contexts, which can lead to sign-in confusion when purchasing or activating services such as Microsoft Teams.

To help provide the most accurate and effective solution for your issue, could you please share a bit more information about your setup and experience?

    • When you mention creating a subscription for Microsoft Teams, what specific subscription are you trying to create (for example, Microsoft Teams Essentials, Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Teams Phone, or another plan)?
    • Could you describe the exact steps you are taking to create the subscription?
    • Are you following a specific Microsoft webpage or sign-up process? If so, please provide the link you are using.
    • When you attempt to subscribe to Microsoft Teams, what exact message or error do you receive?
    • Are you prompted to choose between a Personal account and a Work or school account when signing in?
    • Are you able to sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center using that account, or is the account simply being identified as an admin account during the subscription process?
    • If possible, could you share a screenshot of the message you're seeing? Please ensure that any personal information is removed or masked before posting.

Additionally, since account information may be required to investigate this further, please send the affected email address via Private Message by clicking the Message button located next to the question description. For your security and privacy, please do not post account details publicly in the thread.

This additional context will help better understand your environment, identify whether your email is associated with multiple Microsoft account types, and determine the most appropriate troubleshooting steps.

Looking forward to your response so we can get this sorted out together.

When logging in as the admin, it is telling me my authenticator code is not good.

Sign in explicitly as the work or school account, inspect its organization and administrator status, and only then purchase Teams under the identity you intend to keep.

    1. Identify what the “admin account” belongs to

A personal Microsoft account and a work or school account can have the same email address, but they remain separate identities with different settings and permissions; they cannot be merged.^1^

    1. Open a private/incognito browser window.
    2. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com.
    3. Enter the email address and choose Work or school account when prompted.
    4. Select Organizations.
    5. Review the entries:
      • Home organization owns and administers the work account. You cannot leave it yourself.
      • Organizations under Other organizations you collaborate with are guest memberships. Select Leave beside any organization you recognize but no longer need. If leaving is blocked, that organization’s administrator must remove you.^2^

Do not leave an organization until you have checked whether it contains Teams chats, files, licenses, or other business data you still need.

    2. Determine whether you created the business tenant

Open the Microsoft 365 admin center at https://admin.cloud.microsoft using the work or school account.

    • If the admin center opens, inspect Billing → Your products and Users → Active users. The person who purchases a small-business subscription is normally made an administrator automatically, so this could be a tenant you created during an earlier trial or purchase.^3^
    • If the portal says that you do not have permission, you are not an administrator of that tenant.^4^ Contact the organization’s IT help desk, business owner, or the person who originally supplied the account. Microsoft does not maintain a user-facing directory of administrator contact details.^5^

If the address uses an employer’s or school’s domain, the organization can control the associated work account and Teams service. Do not purchase a personal subscription through that identity unless the organization has authorized it.^6^

    3. Subscribe using the intended account

    • For personal Teams use: sign in to Teams with the Personal account. Teams for personal use requires a Microsoft account, and its sign-in is separate from an organization-assigned Teams account.^7^
    • For a business subscription you will administer: use the work account belonging to the tenant you control. If you can access its admin center, review the existing products before buying another subscription.
    • For an employer or school: ask its administrator to assign the appropriate Teams/Microsoft 365 license instead of purchasing independently.

    4. Remove the duplicate sign-in prompt

If the work identity is valid but you want to eliminate confusion, rename the personal account rather than trying to merge the accounts:

    1. Sign in to the personal account at https://account.live.com/names/manage.
    2. Select Add email and add a different personal address or create a new alias.
    3. Make the new address the primary alias.
    4. After confirming that the new alias signs in correctly, remove the work email from the personal account if desired.

Aliases retain the personal account’s contacts, storage, subscriptions, settings, and password.^8^ This does not delete or rename the separate work account.

    5. Escalate only if you control the tenant but cannot resolve it

If the business tenant is yours and it has a Microsoft-purchased subscription, open the admin center and select Help & support → Contact Support. If all subscriptions were purchased through a partner, contact that partner instead.^4^

Microsoft Support can investigate tenant and subscription ownership, but support agents cannot directly change personal-account details or bypass account recovery protections.
