Azure for Students eligibility issue

Hello Microsoft Azure Support,

I am a currently enrolled university student at Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta (UTY), Indonesia. My GitHub Student Developer Pack is active, and I use my university student email address for academic verification.

I have never used an Azure subscription before. However, when I try to activate Azure for Students, I receive this message:

"You're not eligible for an Azure free account."

Could you please review my eligibility and explain why my Azure for Students activation is being rejected?

Thank you for your assistance.

If the activation was attempted through GitHub, apply instead through the official Azure for Students page using the UTY institutional Microsoft account and direct university-email verification.

    Apply with direct academic verification

GitHub Student Developer Pack approval does not automatically establish Azure for Students eligibility because the two programs perform separate verification.^1^

    1. Open the Azure for Students page in a private/incognito browser window.
    2. Select Start free.
    3. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your UTY-issued email address—not through GitHub.
    4. Complete verification using the message sent to that institutional address.
    5. Ensure the name and other identity details on the Microsoft account match the university’s records.

If GitHub sign-in must be used, verify that the UTY address is:

    • Added and verified under GitHub → Settings → Emails.
    • Associated with the Microsoft account being used for activation.

The documented requirements are that the applicant is a full-time student at an accredited, degree-granting two- or four-year institution, meets the applicable age requirement, and verifies academic status through the institution’s email address. The offer is limited to one subscription per eligible customer.^2^

Microsoft publishes an Indonesian Azure for Students enrollment page, so this error alone does not show that Indonesia is unsupported.^3^

Request an eligibility review if direct verification fails

Since you state that you have never held an Azure subscription, a persistent rejection requires an account-specific review; it cannot be resolved or manually overridden in Microsoft Q&A.

    1. Contact Azure for Education Support at https://aka.ms/azsuportedu.
    2. Select Azure for Students.
    3. Request an eligibility review and ask Support to check:
      • Whether the UTY email domain was recognized for academic verification.
      • Whether a previous eligibility or redemption record is associated with another Microsoft identity.
      • Whether the failed verification attempt has reserved or linked your student email.

A closely matching case confirms that previous eligibility records require access to Microsoft’s backend systems and cannot be reviewed or changed through the Azure portal or community forum.^4^

    Include:

    • A screenshot of the complete error, with session/correlation ID and timestamp if shown.
    • Your country/region and university name.
    • Proof of current enrollment.
    • A screenshot showing the GitHub Student Developer Pack is active.
    • The Microsoft account type used—personal Microsoft account or UTY work/school account.
    • A statement that you have never had a free trial, pay-as-you-go, or Azure for Students subscription.

Do not post your student email, student ID, session ID, or other personal information publicly.

If Support asks for institutional confirmation

Contact UTY’s IT or Microsoft 365 administrator and ask whether:

    • Other current UTY students can activate Azure for Students with the same email domain.
    • The university domain is correctly recognized as an academic institution by Microsoft.

If the administrator identifies an institution-level verification issue, ask them to open a Microsoft support request. Treat this as a conditional check rather than proof that UTY’s tenant or domain is the cause.^5^

    Dear @Ahmad Ikhsan Setiaji,

First of all, I would like to clarify one point: this forum is intended for users to assist one another. As a forum Moderator, I don't have authority or the tools to review my eligibility on your behalf.

The most likely cause is that your institution's email domain is not currently recognized by the Azure for Students academic verification system. What is happening is that the Azure verification engine validates student eligibility against a list of approved academic domains, and your domain may not yet be registered or recognized in that database.

The eligibility criteria for the Azure for Students offer are as follows:

    1. You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited institution.
    2. You must be at least 18 years old or have reached the age of majority in your country of residence, whichever is later.
    3. You must have a valid school email address that ends with .edu or .ac.
    4. You must have a Microsoft account that is associated with your school email address.
    5. You must not have an existing Azure free account or a paid Azure subscription.

I would recommend reaching out to your school’s IT department or Microsoft 365 administrator. They can help verify whether your institution is properly enrolled and recognized within the Azure for Students program.

If everything is proceeding normally, then this issue may require further review by the Azure for Education Support team, particularly if the academic verification process is unable to validate your student status or recognize your institution. You may need to provide:

    • Your academic email address
    • Institution name
    • Country
    • Screenshot of the error message
    • Proof of current enrollment if requested

    For additional information, please review:

In some cases, the academic domain may need to be reviewed and added to the verification system before students can successfully redeem the Azure for Students offer.

    I hope this information helps.

If my answer helped you resolve your issue, please consider clicking it yes. This helps others in the community find solutions more easily.
