A Microsoft offering that enables tracking of cloud usage and expenditures for Azure and other cloud providers.
Create a free Billing support request and bypass the suggested-article loop by selecting Return to support request and then Next.
Submit the billing dispute
- Open the Azure portal’s Create a support request page. Microsoft directs customers with billing questions to this portal workflow, and subscription-management support—including billing—is available without purchasing a technical support plan. ^1^ ^2^
- Sign in with the account that owns or manages the affected subscription.
- Enter/select:
- Issue type: Billing
- Subscription: The subscription associated with the ₹45,000 invoice
- Service: Billing and subscription management
- Problem type: Credits or refunds
- Problem subtype: Free trial or student credits not applied/expired
- When suggested solutions or help articles appear:
- Do not select an article as the final resolution.
- Select Return to support request.
- Select Next.
- If the side panel still shows suggestions, use Create a support request at the top of that panel.
- In the description, include:
- That the resources were used for education and personal development.
- The date the student credit expired.
- When the unexpected charges began.
- The amount being disputed.
- Whether the subscription was upgraded or converted to pay-as-you-go.
- That the usage was unintended and you are requesting a one-time courtesy waiver, refund, or credit.
- Steps already taken to stop further charges.
- The invoice number and affected subscription name.
- Choose Email or another available contact method, complete Review + create, and select Create.
A waiver is not automatic or guaranteed. Billing Support must inspect the subscription, offer history, usage, and invoice before deciding whether a refund or courtesy credit can be granted. Similar student-credit cases are directed to Billing Support for this review. ^3^
Stop additional charges first
Check Cost Management + Billing → Cost Management → Cost analysis, select the affected subscription scope, and use the Invoice details view to identify the services producing the charges. ^1^
Stop, deallocate, scale down, or delete resources that are no longer needed. Deletion can permanently remove data, so export or back up anything required first. Confirm that associated billable components—such as disks, public IP addresses, databases, or service plans—are no longer required rather than assuming that stopping a primary resource stops every charge.
Official Azure for Students behavior is that an expired student subscription is disabled; continued usage is billed at pay-as-you-go rates only after an upgrade. Therefore, include the subscription’s current offer/type and any upgrade date in the case so Billing Support can determine exactly how these charges arose. ^4^
If the ticket option is missing
Case creation requires one of these roles at the subscription level:
- Owner
- Contributor
- Support Request Contributor
- A custom role containing
Microsoft.Support/*
Account-specific billing changes can additionally require the account billing administrator. Ask the subscription owner or billing administrator to assign the appropriate role or submit the request on your behalf. ^2^
Also verify that the selected directory and subscription are the ones shown on the invoice. Selecting the wrong directory can make the affected subscription—and therefore the billing ticket route—unavailable.
