Hi esmar_67,
Thanks for explaining where the key came from. Since it was provided through an MSDN subscription for use with Azure, it may not be a standard consumer Windows 10 Pro key.
Could you confirm whether Windows is installed on a personal PC or an Azure virtual machine, the exact activation error code you’re seeing, and whether the key appears under Product Keys in the subscription portal? Please don’t share the full key publicly. It would also help to know which Windows edition is shown when you press Windows key + R, enter winver and select OK.
A standard Windows product key is normally entered under Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key and usually doesn’t need to be redeemed to an account first. However, this community mainly supports consumer Windows, so I’m unable to verify keys issued through MSDN, Azure or volume licensing from here.
Since the key came from an MSDN subscription, the best next step would be to contact Visual Studio Subscriptions Support. They should be able to check the key type and the subscription entitlement associated with it. You can also sign in to the subscriber portal and check the Product Keys and Get Help sections. If the subscription was provided through your workplace or school, you may also need to contact the subscription administrator who assigned it.
Just as a quick heads-up, Windows 10 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025. A valid license may still activate, but Windows 10 no longer receives standard security updates or technical support. If your device meets the requirements, you may want to consider upgrading to a supported version of Windows when convenient.
I hope this helps point you in the right direction.
