Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
If the former head was the only administrator, the supported recovery path is to regain control through Microsoft’s tenant/admin recovery process.
- First, try to identify whether any other administrator still exists in the organization.
- Contact the internal help desk, technical support, business owner, or the person who originally provided the account details.
- If another admin exists, that admin can reset the account or reassign admin rights.
- If no other admin is available, sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin portal and check whether recovery prompts are available.
- Go to the admin portal.
- Try signing in with any previously used organizational account.
- If prompted to request admin access, follow those steps.
- If access is completely lost, use Microsoft’s official recovery/support path.
- Submit a support request from the Microsoft 365 support page.
- Select I can't sign in or access my tenant.
- Be prepared to verify organizational ownership through items such as business documentation, domain ownership, or other identity verification requested by Microsoft.
- If the tenant is locked out and no admin can complete MFA or password recovery, Microsoft support must engage the Data Protection team through a support ticket.
- This is the path used when the only global admin has left, is unreachable, or MFA/password recovery cannot be completed.
- If the organization’s domain is in an unmanaged directory scenario, follow the Administrator Takeover process for an unmanaged directory as Microsoft Entra administrator.
- If a Microsoft partner created or manages the tenant, contact that partner directly for recovery assistance.
If the issue is only a forgotten password and an administrator still exists, the password can be reset by another administrator, or by using the Self-Service Password Reset wizard if it was configured.
