Locked out of Microsoft account after BIOS update: the only security info offered is an address I never added and can't access

Hello,

My Microsoft account is ******@outlook.com (Microsoft 365 Basic, active until 06/07/2027).

How this started:

I updated the BIOS on my Windows laptop. After the update, my Windows Hello PIN stopped working and Windows asked me to sign in again with my Microsoft account. During sign-in, Microsoft asked for a verification code, and the ONLY option offered is gi*****@outlook.com (******@outlook.com). I have never accessed that address, and when I try to sign in to it, Microsoft says "We couldn't find a Microsoft account." I also don't remember ever adding it as security info when I created my account, so I don't know how it got there.

What I have already tried:

  • Completed the account recovery form on Oct 14, 2026. It was verified, and I reset my password successfully (about 8:22 AM GMT).
  • After that, "I can't verify my account" was blocked for 30 days ("You can't do that again just yet").
  • Added my Gmail as security info at account.live.com/proofs/Add. I received and entered the code from Gmail, but the sign-in page still only offers a code to the old address.
  • Used the Microsoft Account Sign-in Helper. It said support agents can't replace security info manually and that I should choose "I don't have any of these", which starts a 30-day wait.

Why this is urgent:

I cannot wait 30 days. I use this laptop for my job and have ongoing work on it, so being unable to sign in to Windows for a month is a serious problem for me.

My questions:

  1. Is there any faster way to regain access, or a way to sign in to Windows on this laptop without a code sent to the unreachable address (for example, using my new password through "Sign-in options")?
  2. Can the "I don't have any of these" process be started even though "I can't verify my account" is blocked for 30 days?
  3. How could an address I never added end up as the only security info on my account? I also received a security info notification on Oct 10, 2026 that I want to check.
  4. Can a Microsoft moderator escalate this case, given that I have an active paid subscription and can provide proof of ownership (purchase receipt, previous passwords, and recent Microsoft emails)?

Thank you for any guidance.

    Hello,

According to Microsoft’s security policy, if you remove all existing security information, such as a phone number or email address, and replace it with new information, your account will be placed in a restricted state for 30 days. Microsoft cannot expedite this waiting period. During this time, you will be unable to sign in to services that require your security information.

If you make major software or firmware changes to your PC, such as a BIOS update, it can affect the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and cause your Windows Hello PIN to stop working. If this happens, Windows may ask you to create a new PIN.

To verify your identity, Microsoft will send a verification code to one of the recovery methods associated with your account. If you cannot access any of these methods, you cannot bypass this security requirement. You must select “I don’t have any of these” and follow the prompts to replace your security information, as you have already done.

    You currently have two options:

    1. Wait 30 days for your security information to be updated. Once the waiting period ends, you should be able to verify your identity, access the PC, and save your files.
    2. Reset your PC to its factory settings through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). You can then set up the PC with another Microsoft account while the security information for your original account is being updated. Keep in mind that resetting the PC may remove your files, apps, and settings.

To boot your PC into WinRE:

    1. Turn on your Computer.
    2. When you see your PC manufacturer or Windows logo, turn off your PC by holding the power button.
    3. Repeat the same process 2-3 times.
    4. Next time, allow your PC to fully boot into WinRE.
    5. Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Remove Everything and proceed with Local reinstallation.

Let me know if you still need more help.
