Use this Windows checklist to get both the camera and microphone working across apps.
- Turn on device permissions in Windows.
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- If the camera has a built-in microphone, also go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and make sure camera access is turned on.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Select Change, then turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
- Turn on Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.
- In Windows 10, also check Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera and make sure camera access for the device and apps is turned on.
- Check the desktop app setting.
- In Windows 10 version 1903 and later, and in Windows 11, the desktop apps setting affects all listed desktop apps.
- Desktop apps might not always appear in the list, and some can still access the camera or microphone through supported methods even when the list is limited.
- Test and raise microphone input volume.
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone.
- Use Start test, speak normally, then Stop test and Play.
- Raise the Input volume slider if needed.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, confirm the correct microphone is selected.
- Open Device Properties.
- On the Levels tab, adjust Microphone and Microphone Boost.
- Speak and check Test your microphone. If the line moves, the microphone is working.
- If Windows does not detect the microphone, reinstall the audio drivers.
- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click each audio device and select Uninstall device.
- In Windows 11, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- In Windows 10, check Delete the driver software for this device.
- Restart the PC.
- If needed, return to Device Manager, right-click Sound, video and game controllers, and select Scan for hardware changes.
- Then right-click the audio driver and select Update driver.
- If the camera is not recognized or shows 0xA00F4244 NoCamerasAreAttached, update the camera driver.
- This error is commonly linked to outdated, missing, or corrupted camera drivers.
- Use Windows Update to look for an updated camera driver.
- The Windows Camera troubleshooter in the Get Help app can also resolve many camera-related issues.
- If using an external webcam or microphone, check app conflicts.
- Close any other app that may already be using the camera or microphone.
- Close other browser tabs that may be accessing the device.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions that block camera or microphone access.
- If antivirus or security software blocks access, add the app to the allow list in that security software.
- If connected by USB, make sure the cable is connected correctly and drivers are up to date.
- Important privacy exception.
- If Windows Hello is turned on, it can use the camera for sign-in even when app camera access is turned off.
If the goal is for all apps to use the devices reliably, the key settings are the Windows privacy toggles for apps and desktop apps, correct input selection and volume, current drivers, and making sure no other app or security tool is blocking access.
