Hi, I'm working with an Excel spreadsheet and need to activate Data Visualizer in VISIO, but it won't activate. It reads the Excel file but doesn't migrate the data; the "Create" button on the "Data" tab isn't enabled, and Data Visualizer doesn't appear in my add-ins. How can I fix this?

Hello @Romeo Guevara

Based on your description, I understand that Visio can read the Excel file but cannot generate the diagram. The Create button on the Datatab is disabled, and you also cannot find Data Visualizer in the list of add-ins.

First, based on my research, the Visio Data Visualizer add-in for Excel was retired in March 2026. Therefore, you may no longer be able to find or activate this add-in in Excel.

Please refer to the following article: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft_365blog/retirement-of-the-visio-data-visualizer-add-in-for-excel-and-next-steps/4465747

Could you first confirm which Visio licence you are currently using?

In my environment, after I select an Excel Data Template, the Excel data is imported automatically. image

Could you therefore provide the exact steps you followed? Also, did you start from a dedicated Data Visualizer template or from a blank Visio drawing?

If possible, could you describe the exact steps you followed to import the data?

Based on my research, I found an article that provides detailed instructions. The expected process is as follows:

  1. In the template preview, select your preferred unit of measurement, and then select Create.
  2. On the first page of the Create Diagram from Data wizard, choose Select the Excel workbook.
  3. Under Select a table or a custom range in the workbook, select the table containing your Excel process data.
  4. Select Finish. This accepts the default values that Visio automatically fills in on the remaining pages of the wizard.

The diagram should then be created automatically inside a container. Additional Visio pages may also be added, depending on the size of the flowchart.

Could you please confirm at which step the Create button becomes disabled? If possible, please also share a screenshot of that screen and let me know whether any specific error message appears. Please refer to the following article for the correct steps to import the data:

The Excel Data Visualizer add-in was retired in March 2026, so use the Visio desktop app included with Visio Plan 2 and start from a Data Visualizer template rather than trying to reactivate the Excel add-in.^1^

Create the diagram in Visio desktop

    1. In Visio, select File → Account → About Visio.
    2. Confirm that the activated product is Visio Plan 2. The desktop Data Visualizer templates and Create Diagram from Data wizard require Plan 2; Microsoft 365 alone, Visio Plan 1, and Visio Standard do not provide this desktop feature.^2^
    3. Select File → New → Templates → Flowchart.
    4. Open one of these templates:
      • Basic Flowchart – Data Visualizer
      • Cross-Functional Flowchart – Data Visualizer
      • Audit Diagram – Data Visualizer
These templates have an Excel icon. Do not begin with an ordinary blank drawing—the Data Visualizer workflow is initialized by its template.^3^
    5. In the template preview, optionally select Excel data template and populate that workbook. Keep the data in an Excel table, with the required headers and values for the chosen diagram type.
    6. Return to the Visio template preview, choose the measurement units, and select Create.
    7. In Create Diagram from Data:
      • Select the diagram type.
      • Browse to the Excel workbook.
      • Select the Excel table containing the process data.
      • Select Finish.
Visio should create the diagram inside a diagram container.^4^

Why the Data-tab Create button is disabled

The ribbon depends on the Visio build and current drawing context:

    • In older builds, Create, Refresh, and Export appear under Data → Create from Data.
    • In build 16.0.9029.2040 or later, synchronization commands appear on Data Tools Design.
    • Refresh Diagram and Export become enabled only after selecting an existing Data Visualizer diagram container.^2^

For initial creation, open the dedicated template as described above. Selecting imported Excel data in an ordinary drawing does not initialize the Data Visualizer wizard.

If the templates are still missing

    • If About Visio does not show Visio Plan 2, an administrator must assign that license and deploy its desktop app. Visio Plan 2 is the subscription option that includes the Visio desktop application.^5^
    • If Plan 2 is shown but the templates remain unavailable, update the Microsoft 365/Visio installation and verify that Visio is signed in with the work or school account holding the Plan 2 license.
    • If using Visio 2016, the retired Excel add-in is not a fallback: Microsoft states that the add-in was not supported with Excel 2016 and Visio 2016.^1^

After creation, edit and save the Excel table, select the diagram container in Visio, and choose Data Tools Design → Refresh Diagram to migrate the updated table data into the diagram.^3^
