An Azure service that is used to deploy cloud workloads to run on internet of things (IoT) edge devices via standard containers.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is not currently an officially supported Azure IoT Edge host OS, and Microsoft has not published a date or runtime-version commitment for adding it.
Current support status
The official IoT Edge 1.6 platform matrix lists these Ubuntu Tier 1 configurations:
- Ubuntu Server 24.04: AMD64 and ARM64
- Ubuntu Server 22.04: AMD64 and ARM64
- Ubuntu Core: AMD64 and ARM64
Ubuntu 26.04 does not appear in either the Tier 1 or Tier 2 table. Tier 1 is the relevant production designation because Microsoft runs automated tests and provides installation packages for those platform/architecture combinations. Tier 2 receives only community or best-effort support.^1^
Therefore:
- Planned support: No public commitment is documented.
- AMD64 package date: No official release date is published.
- IoT Edge version: There is no published statement assigning Ubuntu 26.04 support to IoT Edge 1.6 or a later version.
- Roadmap: The supported-platform matrix is the authoritative public status page, but it is not a forward-looking Ubuntu support roadmap.
The existence of an Ubuntu 26.04 directory on packages.microsoft.com does not establish aziot-edge availability or official IoT Edge support for that OS.^2^
IoT Edge release lifecycle
IoT Edge 1.6 is the current LTS release and is supported through November 14, 2028. Its lifecycle aligns with .NET 10. The documented cadence concerns IoT Edge runtime releases—not the dates on which new Linux distributions enter the support matrix.^3^
Consequently, Ubuntu 26.04 support could theoretically be added during the 1.6 servicing period, but the published documentation does not promise that outcome. It should not be assumed for production planning.
Recommended production decision
For a fleet that needs Microsoft-supported native aziot-edge packages now, select Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS on AMD64 and plan host-OS migration separately once Ubuntu 26.04 appears explicitly in the Tier 1 matrix.^1^
If Ubuntu 26.04 is a mandatory design requirement:
- Open an Azure support request from the Azure portal under IoT Hub / IoT Edge and request a written support commitment or release target.
- Submit or track the request through the Azure IoT Edge feedback channel linked from the support page.
- Treat any successful installation using another Ubuntu repository or manually downloaded package as validation only—not as a supported production configuration.
- Require Ubuntu 26.04 AMD64 to appear in the official Tier 1 table before using it as the support baseline for the fleet.
The IoT Edge support page also identifies the public GitHub project for bug reports and Azure Feedback for feature requests.^1^
