Removing the laptop from your online device list does not remove your Windows account from the laptop; first preserve your friend’s administrator access, then remove or convert your Windows profile locally.

    1. Ensure your friend has an administrator account

On your friend’s laptop, open Settings → Accounts → Other users.

    • Find your friend’s account.
    • Expand it and select Change account type.
    • Set Account type to Administrator, then select OK.
    • Sign out of your account and sign in to your friend’s account.

Do not remove your account until your friend can successfully sign in to her administrator account. Windows administrators have complete control of the device, and Microsoft recommends limiting that access to the necessary accounts.^1^

    2. Remove your Windows account from the laptop

While signed in to your friend’s administrator account:

    1. Open Settings → Accounts → Other users.
    2. Expand your account.
    3. Next to Account and data, select Remove.
    4. Confirm the removal.

Important: This deletes that Windows profile’s locally stored data from the laptop, such as files under its Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders. Copy any files your friend needs before removing it. Removing the profile does not delete your Microsoft account itself.^1^

If your account replaced your friend’s original Windows sign-in

If Settings → Accounts → Your info displays your email while your friend’s files and settings are all inside that same profile, do not delete it. Convert it to a local account instead:

    1. Open Settings → Accounts → Your info.
    2. Select Sign in with a local account instead.
    3. Enter a new local username, password, and password hint for your friend.
    4. Select Next → Sign out and finish.
    5. Sign back in with the new local account.

That disconnects your Microsoft account while retaining the existing Windows profile and its files.^2^

Afterward, your friend can keep that local account or connect it to her own Microsoft account from Settings → Accounts → Your info → Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.^2^

    3. Remove your account from PowerPoint and other Office apps

    On the laptop:

    1. Open PowerPoint.
    2. Select File → Account → Sign out beside your account.
    3. Close all Microsoft 365 or Office applications.

Signing out disconnects Office from services such as OneDrive and removes Office settings and the recent-document list, but it does not sign out the separate OneDrive synchronization app.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Sign out of Office | Microsoft Support")

Also check Settings → Accounts → Email & accounts. If your address appears as an account used by apps, select it and use the available removal option.

    4. Secure the account remotely

Because removing the device online did not clear the local sign-in, use Sign out everywhere:

    1. Sign in to your Microsoft account’s Advanced security options.
    2. Scroll to Sign out everywhere.
    3. Select Sign out.

Microsoft states that browsers and apps should be signed out within 24 hours, except Xbox consoles.^4^

If you cannot access the laptop, remotely sign out of Office from your Microsoft account’s Installs page. Locate the laptop under Devices and select Sign out of Microsoft 365 or Office; detection can take up to 72 hours.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Sign out of Office | Microsoft Support")

Change your Microsoft account password as an additional precaution if your password or saved credentials may be available on the laptop.

    Hi Vaasuki,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum!

When signing into Office apps like PowerPoint, checking the prompt "Allow my organization/Microsoft to manage my device" connects your account directly to Windows. Removing the laptop from your online Microsoft account dashboard only unlinks the device remotely, but Windows keeps your profile cached locally.

Here is how you and your friend can safely remove your account from her laptop:

Step 1: Ensure Her Account Has Administrator Rights

Before removing your account, her account must be an Administrator so she isn't locked out of administrative tasks:

Have her sign in to Windows.

Press Windows Key + I to open Settings.

Go to Accounts > Other users (or Family & other users).

Click her account name, select Change account type, set it to Administrator, and click OK.

Step 2: Disconnect Your Account from Apps & Email

In Settings, navigate to Accounts > Access work or school.

If your account is listed there, click it and select Disconnect.

Next, go to Accounts > Email & accounts.

Find your account under Accounts used by other apps, click it, and select Remove.

Step 3: Delete Your Local User Profile (If Windows Created a Separate Sign-in Profile)

If your account appears as an actual Windows login on the lock screen:

Have your friend restart the laptop and sign in with her account.

Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.

Locate your account under Other users, click it, and select Remove > Delete account and data.

    Step 4: Clear Saved Credentials

To prevent Office from signing you back in automatically:

Press the Windows Key, type Credential Manager, and open it.

    Select Windows Credentials.

Under Generic Credentials, remove any entries starting with MicrosoftAccount:user= or MicrosoftOffice that reference your email address.

I hope this helps you get your account unlinked cleanly. Please let me know if you run into any permission prompts while following these steps.

    Hello Vaasuki P,

Before removing anything, could you please check where your Microsoft account currently appears?

    • In PowerPoint, under File > Account
    • In Windows under Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts
    • Or under Settings > Accounts > Your info

If Your info shows your Microsoft account, please also let me know whether you see “Sign in with a local account instead.” This would mean the account may be connected to the Windows profile rather than PowerPoint alone.

Please do not remove the Windows user profile yet, since that could delete files stored locally under that profile. Once you confirm where the account appears, I can suggest the appropriate way to disconnect it without affecting your friend’s account. Thank you so much for your understanding.
