Test the camera’s device-level preview in Windows, and if it is also blank, update the camera driver or switch it to Microsoft’s generic USB Video Device driver.
1. Test the camera outside the Camera app
Since privacy permissions and application reinstallation have already been ruled out:
- Close Camera, Teams, Zoom, browsers, and any other application that could be using the camera.
- In Windows 11, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras.
- Under Connected cameras, select the built-in camera.
- Check the preview and select Troubleshoot.
This page tests the selected camera independently of the Camera app and opens the Get Help camera troubleshooter. Also check that the intended color camera—not an IR/Windows Hello camera—is selected. ^1^
Also inspect the lens for a physical shutter and press the laptop’s camera enable key once. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be an F-key used alone or with Fn. A shutter or hardware camera-disable key can produce a lit camera with a black image even when Windows privacy permissions are enabled. ^2^
2. Install camera and chipset driver updates
If the device-level preview is blank:
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Install available camera, imaging, USB, and chipset driver updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update does not request it.
- Test the preview again under Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras.
Optional drivers are not installed automatically, so this list must be checked manually. ^3^
If Windows Update offers nothing, obtain the camera/chipset driver for the exact computer model from the computer manufacturer.
3. Try Microsoft’s generic camera driver
If the camera remains listed but produces no image:
- Right-click Start → Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras.
- Right-click the affected camera and select Properties.
- Open Driver → Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Select USB Video Device → Next.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft documents this as a fallback when an updated manufacturer driver is unavailable or does not fix the camera. If USB Video Device is not listed, cancel rather than choosing an unrelated driver, then install the model-specific camera driver from the PC manufacturer.
Interpret the result
- Preview works in Windows camera settings but not in one application: the camera and driver are functioning; select the same camera inside that application and close other programs that may be using it.
- All cameras show a blank preview after both driver paths: this points beyond Camera-app installation. Record the PC manufacturer/model, Windows version (
Win + R, thenwinver), and any Device Manager error shown under Camera → Properties → General, then contact the PC manufacturer for camera hardware/firmware diagnostics. - Camera is absent from Connected cameras and Device Manager: in Device Manager select View → Show hidden devices, then Action → Scan for hardware changes. A camera can be absent from Windows camera settings when its driver is missing, it is nonfunctional, or another utility disabled it. ^1^
