Windows 11 does not provide a universal default camera setting that forces all apps to use one camera. Which camera is used is largely determined by the app.
To make the monitor camera the one used for video calls:
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Under Connected cameras, confirm the monitor’s camera appears there.
- Select the monitor camera and verify it is working in the preview.
- If the laptop camera is the one apps keep choosing, select the laptop camera in the same Connected cameras list and choose Disable.
- Warning: disabling a camera can affect other cameras on some systems, and some devices may require a restart before the change takes effect.
- Open the video calling app and check its camera/video settings to select the monitor camera explicitly.
If the monitor camera does not appear in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, Windows notes that some cameras might not appear there, including cameras missing a driver or in a nonfunctional state.
If the camera is detected but still not usable in apps:
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Make sure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are turned On.
- In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select the camera and use Troubleshoot to open Get Help.
If the app is Skype for Business, the camera can also be chosen directly in Options > Video Device.
