I have just bought a monitor with an inbuilt camera, which works, but I cant make it the monitor the default camera. I have tried changing the display options but nothing happens. The camera is mostly only showing from the laptop, which is no good for video calls

Thanks

Thank you for the information. Did you try and connect it via USB cable to your laptop? This is the USB that usually comes with it inside the box. This specific model of monitor has a USB upstream cable connected between the monitor and your computer. Without that cable, the monitor can display your laptop screen normally while its webcam is unavailable or not detected.

If this is your setup(connected via USB upstream cable) then try these steps:

    Check Windows camera settings

    1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras.
    2. Select the MSI camera, if it appears.
    3. Confirm that Windows can display its preview.

Select it in Teams and Zoom

    1. Microsoft Teams: Settings → Devices → Camera → select the MSI camera.
    2. Zoom: Settings → Video & effects → Camera → select the MSI camera.

Let me know if the option to select the MSI is available or not.

    Hi!

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Can you tell me what is the make and model of your monitor, and which video-calling app are you using (Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, or another app)?

Windows 11 does not provide a universal default camera setting that forces all apps to use one camera. Which camera is used is largely determined by the app.

To make the monitor camera the one used for video calls:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
    2. Under Connected cameras, confirm the monitor’s camera appears there.
    3. Select the monitor camera and verify it is working in the preview.
    4. If the laptop camera is the one apps keep choosing, select the laptop camera in the same Connected cameras list and choose Disable.
      • Warning: disabling a camera can affect other cameras on some systems, and some devices may require a restart before the change takes effect.
    5. Open the video calling app and check its camera/video settings to select the monitor camera explicitly.

If the monitor camera does not appear in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, Windows notes that some cameras might not appear there, including cameras missing a driver or in a nonfunctional state.

If the camera is detected but still not usable in apps:

    1. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
    2. Make sure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are turned On.
    3. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select the camera and use Troubleshoot to open Get Help.

If the app is Skype for Business, the camera can also be chosen directly in Options > Video Device.
