Hello,

We are currently evaluating the Cohere Embed V5 Pro model available through Azure AI Foundry for potential production use.We noticed that the model is currently listed as Preview, with a retirement date of January 23, 2027, in the Azure AI Foundry model deployment details.

We would appreciate clarification on the following:

  1. GA Availability: Is Cohere Embed V5 Pro expected to transition from Preview to Generally Available (GA) before its scheduled retirement date?
  2. Retirement vs. GA Transition: Does the January 23, 2027 retirement date indicate that the model will be permanently discontinued on Azure, or does it represent the end of the Preview lifecycle, with a GA version expected to replace it?
  3. Existing Deployments: If a GA version becomes available, will existing Preview deployments automatically transition, or will customers need to create new deployments?
  4. Embedding Compatibility: If a GA version replaces the Preview model, will embeddings generated by the Preview version remain compatible with the GA version, or will customers need to regenerate embeddings and rebuild their vector indexes?
  5. Official Roadmap: Is there any official Microsoft documentation or roadmap confirming the planned GA release or long-term availability of Cohere Embed V5 Pro on Azure?

We are particularly interested in understanding whether it is advisable to adopt this model for long-term production workloads, given the currently displayed retirement date. Any clarification from the Azure AI Foundry product team would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Only the following points are supported.

    1. A preview model retirement date does not confirm that the model will transition to GA. Preview models are not guaranteed to become GA.
    2. For preview models, when retirement is reached, Microsoft does one of three things:
      • force-upgrades existing preview deployments to a newer preview version, with at least 30 days notice
      • force-upgrades existing preview deployments to the GA version, with at least 30 days notice
      • retires the model with no replacement, in which case inference returns 410 Gone
    3. There is no option to remain on a retiring preview model. All preview deployments are either upgraded or terminated.
    4. Preview models are not recommended for production workloads.
    5. No official roadmap or commitment is provided here that Cohere Embed V5 Pro will become GA before January 23, 2027, or that it will remain available long term after that date.
    6. If a replacement GA model becomes available, preview deployments are force-upgraded to the GA version when that transition is made, with at least 30 days notice.
    7. The available documentation here does not confirm whether embeddings produced by a preview version remain compatible with a later GA version, and it does not state whether vector indexes would need to be rebuilt.

For long-term production planning, the supported conclusion is to avoid relying on a preview model as a stable production dependency unless a GA replacement and migration details are explicitly published for that model.
