Reset the OneDrive sync client if Windows can find it; if all reset commands report that OneDrive cannot be found, install the Microsoft OneDrive backup-and-sync app using Microsoft’s direct download.
1. Check whether OneDrive is present
- Select Start and type OneDrive.
- If OneDrive appears under Apps, select it.
- Check the far-right side of the taskbar, including the Show hidden icons (^) area, for a white or blue cloud.
The missing cloud means OneDrive may simply not be running. Starting it from the Start menu is Microsoft’s documented first check.^1^
- If OneDrive opens: sign in if requested and allow synchronization to begin.
- If it appears but does not open: reset it as described below.
- If no OneDrive app appears: skip to Reinstall the correct app.
2. Reset an existing installation
Resetting does not delete your files, but it resets OneDrive settings, disconnects sync connections, and then performs a full synchronization.^2^
- Press Windows key + R.
- Paste this command and select OK:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
- If Windows says it cannot find that file, try:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
- If that is also not found, try:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
- Select Start, type OneDrive, and open the OneDrive desktop app.
- Sign in and confirm that the cloud icon appears. A full resync can take some time.
If all three commands produce “Windows cannot find…,” Microsoft states that the OneDrive sync app is not installed.^2^
3. Reinstall the correct app
Since the website route did not get you to the installer, use Microsoft’s direct OneDrive sync-app download:
Download Microsoft OneDrive
Then:
- Open the downloaded installer.
- Complete installation and sign in.
- Wait for the cloud icon to appear.
- Open File Explorer and confirm that OneDrive appears in the left pane.
If Microsoft OneDrive is already listed under Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps, uninstall that entry first, restart Windows, and then use the download above. Uninstalling stops synchronization but does not delete files already stored online.^3^
Be sure to install Microsoft OneDrive, the backup-and-sync client. OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation from Microsoft Store is primarily a viewer and does not back up or synchronize Windows folders.^4^
About the “no app associated” message
Do not change random Default Apps associations yet. First restore OneDrive and verify that its cloud icon is running, because online-only OneDrive files cannot be retrieved correctly while the sync client is unavailable.
If OneDrive is running afterward but the message occurs only when opening Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files, repair Office:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
- Select Change → Quick Repair → Repair.
Microsoft documents Quick Repair for that file-association error when it relates specifically to Office documents.^5^
Do not delete or move files from the OneDrive folder while recovery is in progress unless copies have been verified elsewhere.
