Who gets the 5TB Cloud storage bonus?

I received a Microsoft 365 Family notice of upcoming changes set to take effect in May 2027, and the changes included this nebulous statement, regarding a 5 TB bonus storage bump after they do the downgrade to 2TB shared storage from the 1TB per family member:

Existing Microsoft 365 Family and Premium customers who meet eligibility requirements in supported markets might receive bonus storage when their subscription renews after shared storage rolls out.

I’m asking what are eligibility requirements and supported markets they “might” do this in? It’s all so deliberately vague, and I’m wondering if I need to download everything off of OneDrive, as our family far exceeds 2TB in storage used. Could anyone get a more specific and full explanation of who and where this will happen, and the eligibility requirements?

As of today, Microsoft has not publicly disclosed the specific eligibility requirements or the list of supported countries for the transitional bonus storage. This is still a fairly new development. I suggest that you bookmark this page, so you can check for update https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/changes-to-microsoft-365-storage

Since your family already exceeds 2 TB, I would start making independent backups rather than waiting to see whether the bonus applies. You do not need to remove everything from OneDrive immediately.
