A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Because Remove account is missing, the next step depends on whether the phone is Android or iPhone; on Android, remove the stale account from the phone’s account or Work Profile settings before considering a full Authenticator reset.
Android
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Open the account menu, which may be named:
- Passwords, passkeys & accounts
- Accounts
- Accounts and backup → Manage accounts
- Accounts & sync
- Select the old work or school account and choose Remove account.
- Restart the phone and check Authenticator.
If the account belongs to an Android Work Profile, remove that profile from device settings instead. Warning: removing a Work Profile can also remove its managed apps and work data.
Also sign out of that old account in Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, or Microsoft 365 if it remains configured there; those apps can retain and resurface organizational account information. This procedure matches the reported Android symptom where the gear menu permits renaming but does not display Remove account.^1^
iPhone or iPad
The documented normal path is:
- Open Authenticator.
- Select the old account.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Tap Remove account.^2^
Since that option is not present, the available sources do not document an iOS method for selectively deleting only that stuck entry. Avoid resetting Authenticator until every other account can be recovered.
Last resort: reset all Authenticator accounts
First ensure that every account has another sign-in method or can be registered again. A reset removes all Authenticator accounts, cannot be undone, and prevents this phone from approving sign-ins until setup is repeated.^2^
- Android: Settings → Apps → Authenticator → Storage or Storage & cache → Clear data → OK.
- iPhone/iPad: Settings → General → Storage → Authenticator → Offload App.
For an employer or school account, contact that organization’s IT administrator before resetting if Authenticator is the only available sign-in method. They may need to reset the account’s MFA registration so it can be enrolled again.
