I am the sole admin of a Small Business 365 account. I cannot log in to my account any more. I enter my username and password and move to the two factor authentication page where I am given the option for an sms to be send to my phone. I choose that but I get an error:

Error Code: 399287

Request Id: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]

Correlation Id: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]

Timestamp: 2026-10-12T08:46:45Z

I have spent all morning trying to reach a microsoft representative for support via phone. I managed twice to talk to a support person but the line drops while we are talking and they don''t call me back.

Trying to contact support online doesn't work because I am asked to first log-in as admin which obviously I CANNOT DO!

Please help me as I am getting desperate!

    Hi Florendia,

Thank you for sharing those details.

Based on your description, error code 399287 is commonly associated with Microsoft's security and phone reputation checks. In some cases, these checks can prevent SMS verification codes from being delivered, even when the registered phone number is active and capable of receiving text messages.

Since you are the sole administrator in the tenant and no other administrators are available to assist, then the only way to regain access is contact Microsoft support. Please try locating the appropriate hotline for your region here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

I understand you have already attempted to contact Microsoft Support by phone and were unable to open a case through the IVR system. Please try the following option, and I sincerely hope it helps resolve the issue for you.

In this situation, the Microsoft Data Protection team has tools and processes in place to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts.

When contacting Microsoft, be prepared to verify ownership of the subscription. You may be asked for information such as:

    • Organization name
    • Billing or payment information
    • Registered phone number
    • Alternate email address

Once your identity is verified, the privacy team will be able to reset your MFA settings. You can then reset your account in the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new device or choose a different authentication method to sign in.

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare:

    • IVR: What problem is bothering you?
    • Client: Lost access to the only admin account
    • IVR: What product do you use?
    • Customer: Office 365 for business
    • IVR: School or Business Account?
    • Client: Companies
    • IVR: Are you an administrator?
    • Client: Yes
    • IVR: Is there another administrator in your organization?
    • Client: No. I am the only admin in my tenant
    • IVR: Do you need to create a support ticket?
    • Client: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

I also recommend calling during business hours. In my experience, it can be difficult to get through to the correct support queue, and automated systems don't always work as expected. If you can't get through on your first try, I suggest trying again later or at a different time.

Alternative option if you cannot reach frontline support:

If you're unable to successfully engage support through the phone system, you might consider registering for a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription.

To set up a new tenant, please follow these steps:

Visit Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365. This would allow you to create a new tenant following the prompts provided. Once set up, you can access the admin console of the new tenant and submit a support ticket requesting to speak with the Data Protection team on behalf of your previous tenant.

Follow the guided setup process to create a new account for a new tenant.

Once your tenant is created, you should be able to access the support portal and submit your ticket referencing your locked account without further issues.

In your ticket description, you'll need to clearly explain that you're trying to regain access to your previous Microsoft 365 tenant and need help from the Data Protection team. Here's a message you can use or adapt:

"Hello, I’m currently unable to access my previous Microsoft 365 tenant due to losing MFA access, which prevents me from receiving verification codes. I’m only the global admin, but I’m locked out and unable to generate a QR code or bypass MFA.

I created this new tenant solely to request assistance. I kindly ask to be connected with the Data Protection team to verify my identity and help me recover access to the original tenant.

This is urgent, as I rely on Microsoft 365 for my work and have been unable to operate for several days. I’m available to provide any documentation or verification needed to support the recovery process."

Ticket Support: In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your issue is resolved, as this will help you avoid any accidental billing. You may prefer the following resource for detailed instructions: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

I truly hope this helps you regain access to your account quickly. Even though I can't directly intervene, directing you to the correct and specialized support is the most effective help I can provide from my position.

Thank you for your kindness and contributions to the forum.
