I just signed up for the Free Trial of the 1 Year Subscription. The 365 Apps installed, and the OneDrive upgraded to 1TB storage and all OneDrive folders backed up successfully online. However Excel, Word and all the apps are still obviously using the old one-off purchase versions that were already on my Windows PC. No matter how I access the app the original version without Austosave and without in app CoPilot is the one that opens. I have gone through all the standard Help articles etc but nothing seems to cover or resolve my situation.

At File > Account, click the Switch License button and see if it lets you choose the correct product.

From within Word, you could also try clicking your avatar on the title bar and see which accounts are listed there. If you see something that shouldn't be there, remove it. It may fix the activation / product version issue.

    Hi,

This means that remnants of your previous Office installation may still be on your system and could be conflicting with your new Microsoft 365 subscription.

You may use the Office Uninstall Support Tool (Uninstaller Troubleshooter) to completely remove all Microsoft Office applications from your device and then reinstall Office afterward.

    https://aka.ms/SaRA-officeUninstallFromPC

Once you open the link, click Get Help App. When the tool launches, select Yes, then click Next. Choose the option to uninstall Microsoft 365, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

    To reinstall Office:

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
    2. Sign in using the Microsoft account associated with your license or subscription.
    3. Locate Microsoft Office and click Install
    4. This will download the Office installer
    5. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions

Once installed, open any Office app such as Word or Excel, then sign in using the Microsoft account associated with the purchase to activate Office.

The screenshot shows the desktop apps are still licensed as Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019, not Microsoft 365. That is why subscription features such as Autosave and Copilot are not appearing even though OneDrive storage upgraded successfully.

    Use this order:

    1. Confirm the Microsoft 365 trial is active
Go to Services & subscriptions on the Microsoft account dashboard and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the trial. The Microsoft 365 subscription should appear there as active.
    2. Refresh the app license
Open Word or Excel, go to File > Account, and use Update License if it is available. This forces the app to check the subscription tied to the signed-in account.
    3. If the apps still show Office 2019, uninstall existing Office apps
Since the PC already had a one-time purchase version installed, remove the existing Office installation to avoid conflicts. On Windows, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, find Microsoft Office or Office apps, and uninstall them. Then restart the PC.
    4. Reinstall from the subscription account
Sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services with the same Microsoft account linked to the Microsoft 365 trial. Find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Install.
    5. If subscription features still do not appear after reinstall
Use the Microsoft 365 uninstall troubleshooter to completely remove Microsoft 365 or older Office versions, then reinstall again. Important: this troubleshooter works on Windows 10 or higher and does not uninstall Office 2024.

What to expect after this is fixed:

    • The apps should stop showing Office Home and Student 2019 under Product Information.
    • The installation should recognize the Microsoft 365 subscription instead of the one-time license.
    • Subscription features such as Autosave and other Microsoft 365 features should become available once the app is signed in with the licensed account.
