Switch the document to Print Layout first; if the page boundary returns but the text remains against the edge, reset the paragraph’s left indent rather than retrying the ineffective Margins command.
1. Restore the page view
- In Word, select View → Print Layout.
- Select View → Ruler.
- Confirm that the page appears as a white sheet with visible space on its left side.
Word for Mac displays the page rulers correctly in Print Layout; the ruler can be enabled through View → Ruler.^1^
If you also cannot see the top and bottom page edges, point between two pages until the pointer becomes a double-ended arrow, then double-click. That restores hidden white space.^2^
2. Reset paragraph positioning
If the page edge and its white margin are visible, but the text extends into that margin:
- Press Command+A to select the document text.
- Select Home → Line and Paragraph Spacing → Line Spacing Options.
- On Indents and Spacing, set:
- Left:
0
- Right:
0
- Special:
None
- Select OK.
A negative left paragraph indent can position text outside the normal text area. The Left setting controls how far the paragraph is moved from the left margin.^3^ Word for Mac exposes these settings through the Paragraph dialog.^4^
You can also inspect the horizontal ruler: the left-indent markers should start at the left edge of the ruler’s white text area, not inside the gray page-margin area.
3. Check for a section-specific problem
If only part of the document is affected, place the cursor in that part and compare it with an unaffected page. Word applies margin changes only to the current section when a document contains multiple sections.^5^
Because this began after removing a column, the affected portion may still have different section formatting. In that case, copy the correctly formatted content into a new blank document, or remove the unwanted section break only after confirming it is not needed for headers, footers, orientation, or other layout changes.
