Azure for Students subscription disabled — unable to create Azure AI Speech resource

Hello Microsoft Support,

I am a current college student and need access to Azure AI Speech for a college project requiring Speech-to-Text functionality.

My previous Azure for Students subscription with $100 credit has expired and is now disabled. When I try to verify my student status again, I receive this error: “Your email domain is not currently registered with us. You can choose another verification method.”

I need to create an Azure AI Speech resource and obtain its API key and endpoint. I would prefer to use the free F0 tier if eligible.

Could you please guide me on how to resolve the student verification issue or restore my eligibility for Azure for Students? If my college email domain is unsupported, please advise me on an alternative verification method.

Thank you.

Renew Azure for Students by signing up for the offer again; if the academic-domain check blocks renewal, try the GitHub Student Developer Pack verification route and then open a free Subscription Management support request if GitHub redemption also fails.

    1. Renew through an alternative student-verification route

Azure for Students can be renewed after one year by signing up for the offer again, provided that you remain eligible. Eligibility requires full-time attendance at an accredited degree-granting institution and verification through the institution’s email address; the offer is limited to one subscription per eligible customer.^1^

Because your institution’s domain is not recognized, try this conditional alternative:

    1. Apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack using your college email.
    2. Provide the requested proof of current enrollment, such as a student ID or enrollment document.
    3. After approval, open your GitHub Education benefits.
    4. Locate the Microsoft Azure benefit and start activation from there.
    5. Use the GitHub sign-in/redemption flow for Azure for Students. Ensure the academic email is verified on the GitHub account.

This route has resolved the same “email domain is not currently registered” verification error in Microsoft Q&A.^2^ It is an alternative verification path, not a guarantee that Microsoft will approve renewal.

    2. If GitHub redemption still produces the domain error

Request an eligibility/domain review from Azure subscription support:

    1. Sign in to the Azure portal.
    2. Select the ? icon in the global header.
    3. Enter Azure for Students renewal – academic email domain not registered.
    4. If the suggested solutions do not resolve it, select Create a support request.
    5. Choose Subscription Management rather than Technical support.
    6. Identify the disabled Azure for Students subscription when prompted.
    7. Include:
      • Institution name and country/region.
      • Academic email domain—mask the address in general text.
      • Screenshot of the complete error.
      • Expiration date of the former student subscription.
      • Proof of current enrollment, if requested.
      • The fact that renewal and GitHub redemption were attempted.
    8. Select Review + create, then submit.

Subscription-management support is available without a paid technical support plan. Creating a request normally requires Owner, Contributor, or Support Request Contributor access to the subscription.^3^ A matching Q&A case directs users with this exact error to a free Subscription Management ticket.^4^

Support can review the verification problem, but renewal approval or manual registration of the college domain is not guaranteed.

    3. If the project cannot wait for student verification

An expired Azure for Students credit disables the subscription after 12 months. The documented way to continue using that expired subscription is to contact Azure Support and upgrade it to pay-as-you-go; subsequent service use is billed at pay-as-you-go rates.^5^

Ask for the upgrade in the same Subscription Management request. A payment method may be required, and selecting an F0 resource tier does not itself reactivate a disabled subscription.

    4. Create the Speech resource after obtaining an active subscription

    1. In the Azure portal, create an AI Services/Foundry resource for Speech.
    2. Select the active renewed or pay-as-you-go subscription.
    3. Choose a supported region and select Free F0 if the portal offers it for that subscription and region.
    4. Complete Review + create.
    5. After deployment, select Go to resource and open Keys and Endpoint to retrieve the key, endpoint, and region.^6^

F0 supports one concurrent real-time speech-to-text request, and that limit is not adjustable. Batch and fast transcription are not available on F0.^7^

Store the credentials outside source code:

    # Linux/macOS Bash
    export SPEECH_KEY="your-key"
    export SPEECH_REGION="your-region"
    export ENDPOINT="your-endpoint"

    :: Windows Command Prompt
    setx SPEECH_KEY "your-key"
    setx SPEECH_REGION "your-region"
    setx ENDPOINT "your-endpoint"

Open a new terminal after using setx. Do not commit the Speech key to a repository.
