word documents will not re-save after word has closed

When I reopen a document after word has closed and/or I have restarted my computer, the document will not re-save.

It will save if I "save-as" a new document - but this is NOT a fix, that does not allow me to use microsoft word as it is intended. I need to be able to close and reopen documents while continuing to save them WITHOUT having to resave them as brand new documents. I save files on my desktop, I do not use cloud or onedrive.

Are you able to save successfully in the system Documents folder on your Mac?

This matches a known Mac Word save issue where documents may stop saving normally after reopening, and Save As works as a temporary workaround.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Test in a new macOS user account
      • Go to System Settings > Users & Groups.
      • Create a new user account.
      • Sign in to that account and test saving the same way: open a document, save it, close Word, reopen the document, edit, and save again.
      • If saving works there, the problem is likely related to the current user profile or that profile’s Office setup.
    2. Check the save location permissions
      • Since files are being saved locally on the Desktop, verify the issue is not caused by a permissions problem with the current profile.
      • The new-user test above is the supported way to confirm whether the current profile is the cause.
    3. Reinstall Office for Mac if the issue continues
      • If the problem still happens, or moving to another profile is not practical, uninstall Office for Mac and then reinstall it from the subscriptions page of the Microsoft account.
    4. If Word closes unexpectedly or work is lost, check AutoRecovery
      • In Finder, select Go > Go To Folder or press Shift + Command + G.
      • Open: /Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery
      • If recovered files are present, save them immediately.
      • Note: this folder is hidden, and if Don’t Save was chosen when closing a file, the AutoRecover file is deleted.
    5. If Word repeatedly prompts to save template changes on quit
      • That can be caused by an add-in or a macro-virus issue affecting Normal.dotm.
      • Update virus protection software and check whether an add-in is causing the behavior.

If the issue is specifically that a document reopens, asks to save, then closes and instantly reopens without actually saving, the supported guidance in context is to first rule out a permissions/profile problem with a new macOS user account, then reinstall Office for Mac.
