A few weeks ago I started having difficulty saving word documents on my Mac (and iCloud). I have plenty of storage on the Mac and in iCloud and I've tried many solutions.

It seems odd that the bot wouldn't know this, but iCloud is not a supported location for editing Office files. Many have posted here about file corruption when doing so. iCloud is perfectly safe for storage and transfer of Office files, just not for live editing. Try saving to your local hard disk, then upload the final file to iCloud.

Try this sequence for Word for Mac save problems:

    1. Update Office first
      • Open any Office app.
      • Go to Help > Check for Updates.
      • Enable automatic updates if available, then install all updates.
      • This is the first recommended fix for save, AutoRecover, copy/paste, and disk-related save errors.
    2. Test saving to a local folder
      • In Word, use File > Save As and try saving to a folder on the Mac such as Desktop or Documents.
      • If local save works but iCloud does not, the issue is likely with the online/location side rather than basic Word saving.
      • Online save locations can vary in the Save As dialog depending on Office sign-in status, macOS permissions, OneDrive sync settings, or organizational configuration.
    3. If Word shows upload/save conflict banners
      • If Word shows Upload Failed: Resolve Conflict, select Resolve.
      • Use Next on the Conflicts tab, then accept or reject each change.
      • Close the conflict view after all changes are resolved.
      • If Word shows Upload Pending, leave Word open with AutoSave turned on so it can retry saving in the background.
    4. Reset Word preferences
      • Warning: this removes custom preferences such as keyboard shortcuts, toolbar changes, or dictionaries.
      • Quit all programs.
      • In Finder, open Home > Library. On macOS 10.7 or later, use Go while holding Option, then choose Library.
      • Open Preferences and move com.microsoft.Word.plist to the desktop.
      • Open the Microsoft folder in Preferences and move com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist to the desktop. If Service Pack 2 is installed in older Word versions, use Application Support > Microsoft instead.
      • Start Word and test saving.
      • If the issue is gone, quit Word and return one file at a time to identify the corrupt preference file.
    5. Reset the Normal template if needed
      • Quit all programs.
      • Go to Home > Library > Application Support > Microsoft > Office > User Templates.
      • Move Normal.dotm to the desktop.
      • Start Word and test saving.
      • If saving works, the template was likely the cause.
    6. If the error mentions a serious disk error
      • Update Office if not already done.
      • That error can occur when Word creates a temporary file during save or AutoSave and something interrupts the replacement process.
    7. Important limitation to know
      • Even with AutoRecover enabled, files should still be saved frequently to avoid data loss.
