My Microsoft account used for login stopped working, so I changed my login password. However, after changing it, my original account seems to have disappeared, and a prompt to create a new character appears, completely resetting my progress.

I have clear evidence on Steam, such as my total playtime and achievements I've unlocked over time, but logging back into my original account wiped everything out.

Please help me restore my account. Thank you.

    Hello minseok,

I'm really sorry about the lost progress, I know how frustrating that is after so many hours. I'm just a fellow user here, so I can't see your account or the game's data, but here's the main thing to know.

A Microsoft account is only used to sign you in to the game. Your character and progress are almost certainly stored by the game's developer or by Steam, not by Microsoft. Microsoft doesn't hold or manage third-party game saves, so we can't restore or look into them from this forum. I can't see which game this is, so I can't be sure how it stores its saves.

Since you could log in after the password change, your Microsoft account probably still exists. It looks more like the game is loading a new or empty profile. A few quick checks:

    • Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com with the same email you always used and your new password. If that works, the account itself is fine.
    • In the game, sign out completely and sign back in with that same email, not another Microsoft account. A different account would show up as a brand-new player.

If Microsoft says the account doesn't exist or won't accept your sign-in name, these official pages cover that:

If your Microsoft account signs in fine but the character is still gone, the next step is the game's developer or Steam support for that game. They're the ones who hold the save data. Share your Steam playtime and achievements with them as proof that the account is yours.

I'm sorry I can't promise more than that, but I hope they can get your character back.

If the original Microsoft account now appears missing after the password change, the account may no longer be recognized under the original sign-in name. The supported recovery path is:

    1. Use the Microsoft sign-in helper tool first. It checks the email address or phone number and guides the next recovery steps.
    2. If the original username is not recognized, verify the sign-in name carefully:
      • Check the email domain, such as .com vs .co.uk
      • Check for spelling differences in the email name
      • If another alias or phone number was added to the account, try that instead
    3. If the password is the issue, on the Microsoft sign-in page select Forgot password?, then:
      • Enter the account username
      • Choose a verification method
      • Get the security code
      • Enter the code and set a new password
    4. If no verification option is available or the shown recovery options are unfamiliar, use the sign-in helper tool.
    5. If the account was hacked, run a full antivirus scan on the PC before changing the password again, then review account settings such as connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies after access is restored.
    6. If the system still says the username does not exist, use the account recovery form guidance. Recovery results are sent to the working email address provided, usually within 24 hours. The form can be retried up to two times per day.
    7. If the username still cannot be found after that, contact Microsoft Support through the public support flow and report that the username has stopped working.

    Important:

    • Microsoft support agents cannot send password reset links or directly change account details.
    • If the account was closed, it can only be reopened during the 30-day or 60-day grace period. If it has been inactive for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.

The Steam playtime and achievements may help document ownership of the game, but the supported Microsoft account recovery methods are still the sign-in helper, password reset, recovery form, and Microsoft Support contact flow.
