:::writing{variant="chat_message" id="58321" title="Audio volume issue"} Hello,

I’m having an issue with my audio volume. In some situations, the volume randomly changes by itself, sometimes dropping all the way to 0% and sometimes jumping to 100%.

This happens in multiple apps, including Fortnite and Spotify, so it doesn’t seem to be related to just one specific application.

I haven’t intentionally changed the volume when this happens. It just suddenly moves to 0% or 100% on its own.

Could you please help me figure out what might be causing this and how I can fix it?

Thank you! :::

Hi, I'm Bernard. I'm happy to help!

Have you noticed any changes before the issue starts? And have you installed any hardware or software that may trigger the issue? While waiting for your response, let us run the audio troubleshooter and roll back the audio driver if the issue persists. Kindly follow the steps below:

Method 1. Run the Audio troubleshooter:

Press the Windows Key + R, then type in:

    msdt.exe /id AudioPlaybackDiagnostic

Then hit OK and follow the prompts to run the Audio troubleshooter.

Method 2. Roll back the audio driver:

-Press the Windows key + X

    -Go to Device Manager

-Expand Sound, video and game controllers

-Look for Realtek (R) Audio or High Definition Audio

    -Right-click and click Update Driver

-Select Browse my computer for drivers

-Click Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer

-Choose an old driver or another driver name, then select it and click Next until it installs.

    -Restart the PC and check.

Note: If the issue persists, please download and install the audio driver from your manufacturer’s website.

Since the issue happens across multiple apps, focus on Windows audio settings and the audio driver rather than a single app.

    1. Check per-app volume and output device
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
      • Under Apps, make sure the affected apps aren’t muted and their volume sliders are set correctly.
      • Confirm the correct Output device is selected for the affected apps.
    2. Turn off audio enhancements
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Output, select the audio device in use.
      • Set Audio enhancements to Off.
      • Test again.
    3. Restart Windows audio services
      • Select Start, type services.msc, and press Enter.
      • Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
      • Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and select Restart.
      • Test audio again in Fortnite and Spotify.
    4. Run the built-in audio troubleshooter
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      • In the Audio section, select Run.
    5. Update or reinstall the audio driver
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
      • Restart the PC.
      • If the problem continues, uninstall the driver and reinstall the latest version from the device manufacturer’s website.
    6. If volume is still unusually low or inconsistent, change the audio format
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Output, select the audio device.
      • Select Advanced.
      • Under Default format, choose a different format and test audio.

These steps match the most likely causes in this scenario: app-specific volume settings, output device selection, audio services, audio enhancements, and driver issues.
