If the laptop sign-in is using a Microsoft account, the Windows password is the same as the Microsoft account password.
- First, confirm which Microsoft account is being used on the sign-in screen. If the laptop is trying to sign in with the Outlook.com address instead of the Hotmail address, make sure the correct account name is entered.
- If the password is not accepted, reset the Microsoft account password at Recover your account.
- Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name for the correct account.
- Choose where to receive the security code, select Next, enter the requested information, and select Send code.
- Enter the code in Verify your identity, select Next, then create a new password.
- After the reset completes, use that new password to sign in to the laptop.
If the account name is not recognized, check that the email domain is correct, such as .com versus .co.uk, and try any other alias or phone number associated with the account.
If the account is locked, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com to request a security code and unlock it. Any phone number that can receive text messages can be used.
If repeated wrong-password attempts triggered a temporary block, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper.
If recovery still fails, use the separate account recovery form at this link.
If none of the Microsoft account recovery steps work, support agents cannot bypass the password. The remaining Windows options are to reset Windows or perform a clean installation from bootable media. Warning: resetting or reinstalling Windows can cause data loss if files are not backed up.
