can not paste share lik from onedrive in outlook classic

I’m unable to paste links into Outlook Classic. The links are shared from OneDrive. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office, as well as repairing the Office installation, but the issue still persists.

The same issue occurs in Word and Excel. I cannot paste the link directly and have to copy the link into another application first, then copy it again and paste it into Outlook, Word, or Excel.

Is there a way to fix this issue permanently?

I am having the same issue with one of my clients their entire organization is having the same issue. Works in new outlook but classic outlook when you try to paste a link it will only work as plain text and will not make it a hyperlink

I just noticed another thing regarding the version of the application.

If we go to File > Account, we can see that the Office application (Word, Excel, Outlook and so on) shows one version here:

If we click the button that says Om Word (about Word in English), we get another version number.

This is consistent between our users, so the version in the first image can be anything from ...20032 and upwards, but the version in the second image is 20032, even if the former is on a higher number.

This makes me wonder what version number everyone in this thread is referring to.

seems to be fixed with latest update 16.0.20430.20118 as of 10/7 with at least one user that was exhibiting the issue.
Correction it is version: 16.0.20430.20146 - and it's not fixed. :|

We have users running newer versions than that (2609 (20430.20140) who still have the issue. So, based on all the information in all the places, this issue is not only related to Office version, but Windows version and OneDrive version might affect it as well.

we've also seen their onedrive's copy link option disappear. but this fixed it for a single user, and another user exhibiting the issue yesterday, no longer has the paste issue today. but she also manually ran updates for O365, and it's still working on the 16.0.20430.20146 version.

And a correction, the user I originally posted about is now on 16.0.20430.20146, not 20118. our RMM was not updated yet, so my apologies on that one.

they are on onedrive version: 26.173.906.8
windows 11 build: 10.0.26200.9448

Another user, same org, same exact versions as I mentioned above and it works the first time to paste, but not afterwards. I am at a loss, and have a frustrated client.

This is what I have noticed this far regarding the problem:

we have a non-working user with same versions as your "working user" and it's still failing. with onedrive version at: 26.173.906.8

Can confirm this is an issue with the latest office update.

Based on your description, this does not appear to be an issue with Outlook only, since the same behavior occurs in Outlook Classic, Word, and Excel. That suggests the problem may be related to the Office clipboard integration, link handling, or an interaction with another application rather than the Outlook installation itself.

To help narrow down the cause, could you please confirm a few details?

Are the OneDrive links generated from a work/school (OneDrive for Business) account or a personal Microsoft account?
Does the issue occur when copying all types of URLs, or only links generated through the OneDrive Share feature?
Does it appear any error message when you paste directly into Outlook, Word, or Excel?

In the meantime, you can also try:

Signing out of Office applications and signing back in.
Clearing the Windows clipboard (Win + V > Clear all).
Disabling Outlook add-ins and testing again or you can start Outlook, Word, or Excel in Safe Mode ( press windows + R then type: outlook.exe /safe, winword.exe /safe, excel.exe /safe)
Testing with a different Windows user profile to determine whether the issue is profile-specific.
Updating Office and OneDrive to the latest available build.

The links are generated from a work account (OneDrive for Business).

The issue only occurs with links shared from OneDrive.

There is no error message or notification when trying to paste the link.

Currently, around five people in our company are experiencing the same issue. Two to three weeks ago, repairing the Office installation was still effective in resolving the issue. However, since this week, the repair option no longer fixes the problem at all.

The issue is affecting multiple users, so I suspect it may be related to a recent Office, OneDrive, or Windows update rather than an issue with an individual user’s installation.

Thank you for the additional details.

Given that multiple users are experiencing the same behavior and Office repair is no longer effective, I would also recommend that your Microsoft 365 administrator check the Microsoft 365 Service Health Dashboard for any ongoing incidents and compare the Office, OneDrive, and Windows build versions between affected and unaffected users.

If possible, please share:

Office version/build number (File > Account > About Outlook/Word)

Whether the issue occurs when Office applications are started in Safe Mode

Which browser is being used when copying the OneDrive sharing link (Edge, Chrome, Firefox, etc.)?

These details may help determine whether this is a recent regression introduced by an Office, OneDrive, or Windows update.

I checked the Service Health, but there are no reported incidents related to this issue.

Based on the comments from other users, it seems that this may have been a bug since September. The Outlook version on outlook is Version 2609, Build 16.0.20430.20032.

I’ll try rolling back to an earlier version to see if that resolves the issue.
I haven’t tried opening the applications in Safe Mode yet.

The browser I’m using to copy the link is Google Chrome.

"This appears to be caused by Microsoft 365/Outlook Version 2609. Rolling Office back fixed it for me. Close all Office apps. Open Command Prompt as Administrator. Run: cd /d “%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun” Then run: OfficeC2RClient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.20326.20132 Let Office finish the rollback, then reopen Outlook. Afterward go to: File > Office Account > Update Options > Disable Updates This prevents Office from immediately updating back to the broken version. After rolling back, OneDrive/SharePoint Copy Link worked normally in Classic Outlook again. Note: This rolls back the entire Microsoft 365 suite, not just Outlook. Re-enable updates after Microsoft fixes the issue."

We tested in our environment and the previous version of Office does NOT have the issue. However, that is a temporary fix as Office likes to auto update. So you have to pause updates which leaves you vulnerable to other issues.
