Seald Surface Pro 8 battery not charging

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a brand-new, sealed Surface Pro 8, manufactured in 2021. However, when I connect the charger, the battery percentage stays at 0%.

I ran powercfg /batteryreport in CMD, and surprisingly, the battery health/capacity is reported as 99%.

The device also shuts down immediately when I disconnect the charger.

I’ve tried several methods to revive the battery, including leaving it plugged in for 3–4 hours, but nothing has changed.

What do you think I should do? Is there any way to revive the battery, or does this mean the battery needs to be replaced?

I’m quite worried because I’m not sure I can find a genuine replacement battery, and I’m also concerned that something might go wrong with the device during the replacement.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi Ali,

I understand why this is concerning, especially since the Surface was sold as brand-new and the battery report appears to show 99% capacity.

However, the fact that the battery remains at 0% and the Surface shuts down immediately when disconnected from power is more significant than the capacity shown in the report.

Before arranging service, could you confirm whether the light on the Surface Connect charger is solid, flashing, or off? If you have access to a compatible USB-C Power Delivery charger with sufficient wattage, you could also test whether the Surface charges through USB-C.

Because the device was only recently purchased, I would recommend contacting the seller first to request a return or replacement rather than opening the Surface or attempting a battery replacement yourself. If the seller cannot assist, you can register the device and review the available service options through Microsoft device service and repair.

For safety, please stop using the device and disconnect it from power if you notice swelling, unusual heat, odor, or separation around the screen. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Since the Surface Pro 8 stays at 0%, shuts off immediately when unplugged, and powercfg /batteryreport still shows high capacity, the next steps are the standard Surface charging and battery detection checks.

    1. Check the charging basics first
      • Try a different wall outlet.
      • Make sure all cable connections are secure.
      • If the Surface Connect power supply has a USB charging port, make sure nothing is plugged into it.
      • Disconnect any accessories that use a lot of power.
      • Confirm the charger meets the charging requirements for Surface.
    2. Force a restart
      • Select Start > Power > Shut down.
      • Wait a moment.
      • Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
      • If the logo appears after a few seconds, keep holding until the logo appears again.
    3. Check the battery icon status in Windows The symbol on the battery icon determines the next action:
      • Plugged in, not charging: use the correct Surface power supply, disconnect accessories, then reinstall the battery driver.
      • Not plugged in even though the charger is connected: unplug the Surface Connect charger, flip the connector orientation, reconnect it securely, wait 10 minutes, and check again.
      • Battery not detected (red X): if the Surface turns off when unplugged, start a service request.
      • Charging with an exclamation symbol: the device is receiving power, but not enough to charge; switch to the power supply designed for that Surface.
    4. Reinstall the battery driver Do not do this on Surface Pro X. For Surface Pro 8, the documented steps are:
      • Plug in the Surface.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Batteries.
      • Open Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery or Surface Battery.
      • On the Driver tab, select Uninstall device > OK.
      • Select the computer name at the top of Device Manager.
      • Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
      • Restart the Surface.
    5. Check updates in the Surface app
      • Open the Surface app.
      • Expand Help & support.
      • If updates are available, select Check for updates and install them.
      • Use Get help in the app to check for detected issues.
    6. Check battery capacity with Surface tools Since powercfg /batteryreport shows about 99%, also check with the supported Surface tools:
      • Surface Repair Tool or
      • Surface Diagnostic Toolkit
Microsoft states that if battery capacity is below 70% of design capacity, replacement is an option. A reported capacity near 99% does not match a battery that instantly dies when unplugged, which points more toward a charging/detection problem or a hardware fault than normal battery wear.
    7. If it still powers off immediately when unplugged If the battery is not detected or the device still cannot run on battery after the steps above, the documented next step is service/repair. If there is visible battery expansion, stop using the device and handle it carefully.
