A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Normal.dotm is Word’s global template file. The error indicates Word is having trouble opening that file after the Windows 11 upgrade. To fix this, locate and rename Normal.dotm so Word creates a fresh copy.
Follow these steps:
- Close Word and all other Office apps.
- Press Windows + R, type:
and press Enter.%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates - In the Templates folder, look for Normal.dotm.
- If it exists, right‑click it and choose Rename.
- Rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm (or NormalBeforeRestore.dotm).
- Close File Explorer.
- Start Word again.
- Word will not find Normal.dotm and will automatically create a new, clean Normal.dotm file.
Notes:
- Renaming (not deleting) preserves the old file in case custom styles, macros, AutoText, or other customizations are needed later.
- If multiple versions of Word are installed, there may be more than one Normal template; repeat the rename for each Normal.dotm tied to the affected installation.
If Word still reports a problem with Normal.dotm after this, run Word once with default settings using the /a switch (diagnostic step):
- Close Word.
- Press Windows key, search for Run, open it.
- Type:
and press Enter.winword.exe /a - If Word opens without the Normal.dotm error in this mode, the issue is with the template or add‑ins; keeping the newly created Normal.dotm and reviewing add‑ins would then be the next step.
