My C drive is getting full. I have removed items I no longer use but there is only 7.5 G free and a red bar is showing. How do I add more space to my C drive?

Welcome Charlotte Quintino,

I understand that your C drive is running low on space on Windows 11, even after cleaning files, moving data, and adjusting OneDrive settings, and you would like to know how to safely free up or add more space, including whether OneDrive can be reinstalled on another drive.

To help identify the fastest resolution, please confirm the following:

  • Is your D drive an internal drive or an external USB drive?
  • Do you see any unallocated space next to the C drive in Disk Management?

In the meantime, you can try the workaround steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Step 1: Check what is actually using space on C drive

  • Open Settings, go to System, then Storage
  • Select C drive and review the largest categories such as Apps, Temporary files, and Other

Step 2: Uninstall unused desktop applications (not Microsoft Store apps)

  • Open Settings, go to Apps, then Installed apps
  • Sort by size and uninstall apps you no longer use that are still installed on C drive

Step 3: Move personal folders off C drive

  • Open File Explorer
  • Right‑click Documents, Pictures, Videos, or Downloads, select Properties, then Location
  • Choose Move and select a folder on D drive

Step 4: Check if C drive can be extended

  • Right‑click Start and select Disk Management
  • If there is unallocated space immediately after C drive, right‑click C drive and select Extend Volume
  • If there is no adjacent unallocated space, C drive cannot be extended using built‑in Windows tools

About OneDrive installation location

  • OneDrive must be installed on the system drive (C drive)
  • It is supported to store the OneDrive folder itself on D drive, which you already configured correctly
  • Reinstalling OneDrive to an external drive is not recommended and may cause sync issues

Besides, you can try other optional cleanup steps

  • In Disk Cleanup, select Clean up system files
  • Review items such as Windows Update Cleanup and Previous Windows installations if shown

I really hope that the information I gave above was helpful to you. Please feel free to reply below and let me know if you have further concern on this matter.

I ran Storage Sense, I cleared my cache, deleted recycle bin and downloads folder. I moved the software for My Heritage and Family Tree to an external drive. I also moved my OneDrive storage to my D drive but the OneDrive software is still on the C drive. Is it OK to reinstall OneDrive on my external drive?
