Main Outlook Window Not Regaining Focus

Here is the revised text with corrections:

This issue popped up for me in what I believe to be the latest update, version 16.103 (25110922).

I use separate message windows, meaning that when I double-click a message, a window opens with it. When I close that window, the main Outlook window does not regain focus.

This used to only happen when a meeting reminder was being displayed, but now it occurs all the time.

Workflow example: Open the message to respond. Send the email; that window closes, and I'll use CMD+SHIFT+M to move the message to an archive folder. Now, I have to click on the main window to activate it, then use the keyboard shortcut.

It seems that you are experiencing an issue with the main Outlook window not regaining focus after closing separate message windows. This behavior may be related to changes in the latest update of Outlook. Unfortunately, the provided context does not contain specific troubleshooting steps or solutions for this particular issue.

However, you might want to consider checking for any additional updates or patches that may address this focus issue. Additionally, you can try restarting Outlook or your computer to see if that resolves the problem. If the issue persists, you may want to reach out to Microsoft support for further assistance.

    Hi Carter, Brad

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

According to the workflow you described, I also attempted to replicate the steps using my environment (macOS Sequoia 15.7.1 and Outlook version 16.103.1 25111624) and I found that I am not experiencing the same issue.
Based on my research and experience, I would like to share some information from my side, which I hope will prove useful. (Please let me know if I’m mistaken)

Immediate Workarounds Using CMD + Tab: These will not completely resolve the issue, but they can make your workflow less cumbersome compared to using the mouse.

    • Open the message you want to respond to > Send the email (the window closes).
    • Press CMD + Tab once to immediately switch back to Outlook.
    • Press CMD + SHIFT + M to archive the message.

If the previous version did not exhibit this issue, you might consider temporarily switching back until the next update is released:

This is regularly and easily reproducible to me, including on the newly released 16.103.2 (25112216).

Upon fresh restart of outlook window focus works as expected. After the first outlook built-in reminder (for a calendar event) pops up, the issue starts. What I see, using AltTab (redacted image below), is that the Reminder window never actually closes and remains open, but hidden. This is stealing the focus away from the main window. The window is not listed in the Window menu item. Even when I focus on that hidden reminder window and use command+w to close it it remains open.

This is 100% reproducible after the built-in reminder first shows. Quitting and relaunching fixes again until the next reminder.
