In Excel, what does the little green triangle in the upper left corner of a cell mean?

I have downloaded a spreadsheet and all of the cell with numbers in them have a little green triangle in the top left corner of the cell. The cells do not act like numbers, though--I can't add them or even convert the format to currency or dates, etc. What does the green triangle mean, and how do I convert these cells to numbers?

The green arrow usually indicates an inconsistent field. For example, the column might be using a formula from top to bottom, but there might be some cells in this column where user enter manually a value or a different formula, causing it to now follow the formula applied on this column, then it will give this green arrow. If you click on it, it should give you the yellow error dropdown showing you options.

If you want the cell to apply the formula that should be for that column, click on "restore to calculated column formula".

The green triangle is an Excel error indicator. In this case, it commonly means the value is stored as text, not as a real number. That is why the cells do not behave like numbers for addition, currency, or date formatting.

    To convert them to numbers:

    1. Select the affected cell or range.
    2. Select the error indicator in the top-left corner of the cell, or press Alt+Shift+F10.
    3. Select Convert to Number.
    4. The values should become normal numbers, the green triangle should disappear, and the values should no longer be treated as text.

If the error button does not appear, enable error checking:

    1. Go to File > Options.
    2. Select Formulas.
    3. Under Error Checking, turn on Enable background error checking.

If the values were entered into cells formatted as text and no green indicator appears, applying a number format can help in some cases, but formatting alone does not always convert text to real numbers.
