Yes. In most cases, Windows Hello and fingerprint sign-in can be restored by reinstalling the biometric driver and setting up the sign-in method again.
- Check for Surface or Windows updates first
- Open the Surface app > expand Help & support.
- Select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install available updates.
- Then test Windows Hello again.
- Reinstall the fingerprint device in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- Right-click the fingerprint sensor and select Uninstall device.
- Restart the laptop.
- Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
- Set up fingerprint again
- Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Open Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
- Select Set up.
- When enrolling, place the finger in the middle of the fingerprint power button with light pressure and slightly change finger position a few times so more of the finger is captured.
- If fingerprint is missing or not recognized after reinstall
- In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, remove the nonworking fingerprint enrollment if it appears, then re-enroll it.
- If the fingerprint option is unavailable with a message that Windows can’t find a compatible fingerprint scanner, return to Device Manager and confirm the sensor appears under Biometric devices.
- If fingerprint still fails, reset the PIN and try again
- Sign in with the password.
- Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello).
- Select I forgot my PIN and reset it.
- Then try setting up fingerprint again.
- If Windows Hello still does not work
- Check System Information > System Summary and confirm Virtualization Based Security shows Running.
- In System Information > Software Environment > Running Tasks, check that
bioiso.exeandngciso.exeare running. - If biometrics still is not working, restart the biometric service:
- First remove the PIN in Sign-in options.
- Then open Command Prompt as administrator and run
net stop wbiosrvc && net start wbiosrvc.
- This changes sign-in configuration, so use care and make sure the password is available before removing the PIN.
- Last resort
- If Windows Hello worked before the Device Manager change and still cannot be restored, a recently changed driver or system update may be involved. A restore or reset of the PC can resolve it.
