The illuminated lock icon with “9” is the Num Lock (Number Lock) indicator, meaning the keyboard’s numeric keypad is currently set to type numbers. ^1^
- Light on: the number pad enters numbers.
- Light off: those keys may perform navigation functions such as Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, or arrow movement.
- Press Num Lock once to switch it off or on. On a compact Dell laptop keyboard, the shortcut may require Fn + the key marked Num Lock/NumLk.
- This is a normal keyboard setting, not a Windows 11 fault.
On some Dell wireless keyboards, the LED lights only briefly to conserve battery even though Num Lock remains enabled. ^2^
To hear a sound whenever Num Lock changes, open Start → Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard, then enable Toggle keys. ^3^
