    Greetings,

Thank you writing to Microsoft community.

On the issue "unable to edit a word document I created? When I open it, it says view only."

To have further information on the issue, I would like to know:

    1. Is Read only status shown on only one document or it's across all word documents on your computer.
    2. Is the file stored on Local computer storage or shared from OneDrive?
    3. Would you kindly share what type of license you have?
    4. Have there been any changes to the license since before you encountered the issue?
    5. Since you’re using the business tag for the question, I’d like to know if anyone else has encountered an issue similar to yours.
    6. Could you provide a screenshot of the error?
    7. Try log out and log in again and see what happens.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Common causes are:

    1. The document is opening in Viewing mode instead of Editing.
      • In Word, use the mode drop-down in the upper-right corner.
      • Switch from Viewing or Reviewing to Editing.
    2. The file was set to Always Open Read-Only.
      • Go to File > Info > Protect Document.
      • If Always Open Read-Only is enabled, select it to clear it.
    3. The document has editing restrictions.
      • Some restrictions are set by the document owner or organization and cannot be changed locally.
      • If the file was shared from OneDrive or SharePoint, the available modes depend on the permissions granted.
    4. The file is still locked from a previous crash.
      • Close Word.
      • Restart the computer.
      • Open the file again and check whether editing is restored.
    5. A practical workaround if the original file stays view-only:
      • Open the document in OneDrive or SharePoint in a browser.
      • Download it to the local drive.
      • Open the downloaded copy in the desktop version of Word.

If the document was intentionally made read-only, Word can allow reading or copying but not modifying unless protection is removed or a new copy is saved.
